1993 C2 Cab. It has been sitting for a month or so on a tender in the garage. It is due brakes pads and rotors and I have them to replace, but otherwise in tip top shape. I have owned this car since new and I have owned other 911s, so I am not a stranger to these cars.

Anyway, took it for a spin today to enjoy the weather. After about 30 minutes I heard a beeping sound that, at first, I thought to be my cell phone receiving a text. Thought nothing of it. Then it started to do it again and got louder. It would come and go until finally it became constant. It seems to be coming from under the steering column. It is not the same alarm you hear at start up key turn. I have never heard this sound before.

Got home and broke out the manual as well as the 964 Bible. I cannot figure out what it is. There are no warning lights, the center console warning kill switch does not stop it. Brakes work fine. Best I can figure according to the literature is some type of brake booster alarm? Anyone ever gotten this noise or know any secrets? thanks in advance

could it be the alarm beeping, having not been fully charged?

No, it is definitely some type of warning signal I believe, just one I have never heard. I cross posted this over on Rennlist and hopefully will get an answer soon. Just was hoping one of you guys have had this situation. A search over there resulted in some type of "gong" warning I have never heard of and it has some mixed opinions from their board mostly being different noises for various models made for world markets. My tender showed the battery as being fully charged. My gut feeling is that it has to do with the brakes and maybe after I slap on new pads and rotors it will correct itself.

I would agree w/ the brakes if the brake warning light was lit, too; but since it's not I doubt it's brake-related.

on some cars, the alarm has a backup battery that discharges and the main battery tender doesn't get it charged properly, no idea if that applies to the 964.

If rennlist can't answer it, I don't know what to tell ya :)

I had a 1993 cabriolet (sold to buy the ferrari)- anyway, I recall there being a factory alarm "speaker" right between the tach and the oil temp/pressure gauge, by the bottom of the two gauges. I don't remember what that was for, but it's probably what you are hearing...I would think the guys at rennlist would be all over this with an answer :)

There is an audible warning for the 964 designed to alert the driver that the brake system pressure is building. Its a piercing rather annoying pulsating sound.

That would be my 1st assumption.

Yea, that would be a good description. A lot of the C4 guys describe this as something to do with their hydraulics ,but debate over the C2 guys. My mechanic gets back in town tomorrow and is coming to the house. I will let you guys know what I find for future reference..

I was thinking brake pressure too, but it is odd that there is no light on.

Yes, I had that on my 1991 964 turbo. No warning lights associated with it. Mine would randomly do this for several seconds on occasion then once pressure was back above tolerances levels it would cease.

I did not pursue it any further as it was only a once in a while nuisance but I knew what the assumed culprit was.

My 964 would do something similar. Check the coil and distributor wires. Mine had corrosion on one of them, I cleaned it up and the beeping never came back.

TSOL...I just replaced all sets of wires and caps when I last had engine out for clutch replacement . This engine and car almost mint and stored in climate controlled. It must be something with the brakes. Very suspicious that brakes need to be replaced at the same time noise appears. As soon as I nail it down, I will let you guys know.

Thanks again for all the input

Installed all new pads and rotors in the driveway this afternoon and the buzz went away. My mechanic confirmed that noise as a booster alarm, but it miraculously cured itself with the new brakes. Maybe a coincidence, maybe not. The cars has been sitting for awhile on a tender and maybe it just needed some TLC. Thanks again for the input.

Thanks, but I figured it out. the guys at rennlist were split between the c4 c2 guys. My mechanic, who was out of town at the start of this thread, and has worked on these cars all his life knew exactly what it was. You know you got a good mechanic when he takes you to his place in the Caribbean as well as coming to your house to walk you through a brake job. if only i could get a Ferrari mechanic to do the same for my 575.

Actually, all I did for him Sunday was make him a great turkey sandwich. We have been friends forever.
