I am 19, about to start working on my private pilots license. It is my freshman year in college and i plan on taking out a student loan in the next week or so and then beginning my lessons. This year i am a student at a community college near auburn university and should do my lessons at Auburn-opelika airport for a while but plan on transfering next year to UGA and taking lessons at the flight school of barrow county. My roomate already has his private license and is working on his instrument and I have gone up multiple times with him learning as much as i can. I have just started reading Gleims private pilot book. I am just looking for as much advice or guidance as possible. i was also wondering how much of a difference a four year degree or two year degree makes if i want to become a commercial pilot. thank you for your help.

Since you asked for opinions, I'll give you mine.

I'm a private pilot and have a Cirrus. It's the greatest thing I've ever done in my life. I fly myself everywhere.

I would never, ever, ever do it as a career. Back in the day it was great. I would not take out a loan to do flying lessons. I don't think you'll ever make enough money flying to pay them back.

If you are going to get training for a career, make sure it's a career where you can actually make money.

The avionics in my Cirrus are so advanced I'd be willing to bet that in 10 to 20 years you won't need a pilot in the airplane. Mine flys itself.

Jason is right, but you still need pilots. Heck, even today most commercial planes are landed by computer. There is a HUGE demand for pilots right now. Regionals are picking up right seaters with only 200 hours and ME. Of course the money isn't very good until you become Captain, but possible you might make that in 10-15 years. The old question is if you want to fly for fun or fly for career. Just because it is your career doesn't mean you will have that much fun with it. There are many business jobs you'll get to $100k+ a year quicker and be able to afford "fun" flying as a hobby.
