If you are a fan of Italian automobile design, have you heard of this?

This exhibit will be at the Frist Center for Visual Arts in Nashville starting this weekend, running May 27–October 9, 2016.

Some feature cars in the exhibit: the Lancia Stratos Zero HF concept, and the three Alfa Romeo BAT cars from the 1950s!

Frist exhibit link is at: Bellissima! The Italian Automotive Renaissance, 1945?1975 - Frist Center for the Visual Arts

    Exhibit description and car list:

Bellissima! The Italian Automotive Renaissance, 1945–1975 celebrates the visual dynamism and spirit of innovation characterizing Italian coachbuilt cars, concept cars and motorcycles produced during the post–World War II economic revival. Returning to the Frist Center after the 2013 presentation of Sensuous Steel: Art Deco Automobiles, automotive authority and guest curator Ken Gross has chosen 19 automobiles and 3 motorcycles from private collections and museums that are among the finest examples of Italian automotive design, including vehicles by Alfa Romeo, Bizzarrini, Ducati, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Lancia and Maserati. With the ultra-rare Alfa Romeo BAT models 5, 7 and 9 from the 1950s and a 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO, this all-star assembly offers surprises for even the most knowledgeable car aficionados. These powerful and extraordinary cars exemplify the sexy and streamlined Italian design language that propelled Italy to the forefront of automotive design internationally.

After World War II, Italian automobile designers began to create sleek, low-slung berlinettas (coupes) that would win postwar races and inspire a legion of stunning road-going cars. New companies like Cisitalia and Ferrari used the resumption of auto racing as a platform to begin producing stylish cars that soon caught the attention of wealthy glitterati, movie stars, and influential industrialists. These clients relished the idea of exclusive, often bespoke automobiles, with powerful engines and advanced styling. Alfa Romeo, Lancia, Maserati, and smaller Italian carmakers soon followed suit; Ferruccio Lamborghini created a grand touring Berlinetta that would rival Ferrari’s.

With their startling, often sensual designs, Italian cars from the mid-century had an immense influence on the automotive industry around the world. The successful racing efforts of Ferrari, Maserati, Lancia, and Alfa Romeo ensured that Italian automakers dominated international competition. Lessons from racing were applied to the design of road cars and Italy’s auto industry helped lead an international styling renaissance. In 1954, Road & Track declared, “The Italian influence leads the automotive design world. It remains consistent, commanding, spirited and graceful.”

Coach builders worked with carmakers in Italy as well as those in countries like England and Spain. In the United States, Italians designed and built bodies for production cars like Nash, Hudson and even Cadillac. Chrysler hired Italian designers to build a series of dramatically modern concept cars, including Firebirds and Firearrows. Their so-called “Forward Look” styling intrigued American buyers and influenced many later production models.

I know, just lazy. A couple weeks ago the Snowball Rally rolled right into my hood, so I get spoiled. The groups, clubs, rally's - many roll through here, then there is Hot August Nights, you see a little but of everything that week too.

That's a nice Italian lineup if you are in Nashville, TN. Doubt folks there have ever seen many in this group.

Which reminds me, this past weekend a gleaming red/black Austin Healey ripped by on the hwy...thinking I may have missed an event or gathering up here this past weekend?

The curator of this and other exhibits must have his own business of some sort, I haven't looked it up. He put together another exhibit that had the Lancia Stratos, and the book of that exhibit was very nice also. The book had the BATs in it, but the cars were not in the exhibit.

Very cool. I'd love to see this.. The Bellisima exhibit is advertised in this month's Hemmings..

Could be, but not necessarily. It's the job of any good museum director to bring solid exhibit material to their patrons. But no doubt a good museum would have a well-connected Board of Directors… and Nashville doesn't lack for VIP's..

Don't be too surprised at what "little town" museums can pull together for exhibits.. I think we'd all be surprised if we knew what lurks closer to home than we think.. Nashville is also home to The Lane Museum, a well-known auto museum who happens to be putting on companion exhibit on Italian design opening tomorrow..

Macchine Italiane: A Tour of Italy's Motoring Spirit at Lane Motor Museum - Lane Motor Museum

We are 3 hours from NYC, but we've got the Saratoga Automobile Museum, with a good director, plus Brock Yates is one of the Board members with other local business peeps. They bring interesting things.. and it helps to have Hemmings Motor News within an hour's drive hosting shows ..

    Good stuff, all of it.

I ran the Snowball Rally in 2012, what a fun event! One little section my co-pilot dubbed Le Petit Dakar -- very rocky and at least one vehicle suffered damage. I was glad I had just installed a sump guard on my Fiat 124 Spider. I'd still recommend it with the proper preparation.

I just ordered the book -- thank you both!

Just look at what Bilbao has done with ~half the population of Nashville.

Nashville was the location of this year's Alfa Romeo Owners Club national convention. While that may not have been the deciding factor, it certainly helped sell a few tickets, including one to me. Went to the Lane Museum first and then to downtown to see the BATs. I have seen just about all of those cars in magazines, but it was cool to see them in person.

    Cheers,

I am going to take advantage of a day off and drive up to Nashville on Friday to see it.
