I'm guessing the OP wants to use a sonic belt tension tester to tension his timing belts. You enter in the belt length, width and belt mass constant and pluck the belt. It will make a sound, like a guitar string, and the tester measures this vibrating frequency and converts it to a belt tension. For tensioning the belts, why not just use either "Ferrari's Method" or "Verell's Method"?
Doh?!?!??! Got ya. There are probably a COUPLE of guys, and I mean less than 5, here that thru MANY years of trial, error and only God knows what else, have learned but will not share that "F-Flat" type of data. They have extrapolated this info (see above) as Ferrari NEVER even went down that road as I understand it until very recently. The Pros here give us 97% of their tool box free of charge now. I really do not blame them for not sharing a data point or two, as a professional has to retain a ace or two to stay relivant; that is their right. And NONE, I am near 100% sure, has EVER witheld info that would prevent catistrophic consequences to any of our cars. So, ..............
Hmmm, Interesting topic...... Does anyone else's belts "sing" , i.e. whine when the engine is running. As part of a rebuild, mine were replaced by someone other than me. The tension is more than I have ever previously had on the belts when I changed them. He does his tenisioning based on feel, I followed the procedure in the manual and tightened the belt tensioner at maximum displacement. He indicated that "singing" was quite common on new belts...... It might be interesting to record the notes that our belts make when plucked ...... and decide what the right note is
I did calculate a belt mass constant to use in determining the static tension max and min at various locations. I was checking if anyone had a Dayco factory mass constant. I have contacted Dayco and have not had a reply yet. The tensioer bearings have a limitation for belt tension. My tensioner bearing in the photo has less than 2 hours of running time and the max tension of the belt was less than 61.7 lbf. Image Unavailable, Please Login
