Just belts and tensioners - and nothing else - should be a tad over a grand. $1500 max.

The parts are relatively cheap. A skilled mechanic doesn't need 10 hours to do this.

Problem is there is usually a few other things in there that are cheaper to address while you are at it so the bill can go up. Just depends...

But, again, just belts and tensioners alone won't break the bank at all.

I would also do the water pump as long as your in there . Hill Engineering for the parts , they can be sourced readily.

    Thank you,

My water pump was replaced when I bought the car in 1998. I appreciate that they do fail but replacing them as a 'service' item with the belts seems like overkill to me!
And while I'm here... I fitted Hills tensioner bearings about 8 years ago, I don't expect to be changing those just yet.
Obviously, mileage, luck & other factors do come into play,

I have just ordered the parts from Superformance to do a belt change (2 belts), with postage and tax I'm look at about GBP 22.00 (US$30)

I agree - no reason to replace parts that don't need replacing! As I've asked before, anybody here change their wheel bearings periodically?

I purchased my GTB turbo #77780 seven years ago, a very low mileage car: the seller was a mechanic shop, so they did a big service before the sale. They gave me the Ferrari invoice of the items they purchased and installed: all the belts and the tensioners bearings. Now, after 7 years (and 1200 miles only), I sent the car to my mechanic for a belt service and a waterpump service: the mechanic (Toni Auto, at Maranello) asked me: "Why? here everything is like new!!". I answered this: "I don't know the waterpump age, so I want a new waterpump, as I could have on the car the factory installed one. Please change also the belts while you are doing the waterpump service, as I will save half the labor cost doing both together".

    Ciao

If I remember right, the water pump on an '84 can be changed out without the timing belts coming off? If that's true, it might not really be worth doing. I didn't do my '85 QV's water pump when I did the belts recently for this reason.

1998 ? I would replace the pump, no questions asked , thats 23 years , right ? I dont know, I guess Im just anal when it comes to my 328 , I replaced all my gauges, they were all working fine, I just could not stand the faded orange look, so now they are all brand new.

Seven years and only 1200 miles ? I guess you folks in Italy dont drive that much lol

    Thank you

It makes sense to me, being that these parts are inexpensive , if your going to replace the belts, why not the bearings ? Are you going to wait another 8 years ? If one of them fails, thats big big trouble . Just my 2 cents.

    Thank you

And you don't need to replace it at a belt change - that advice is either from an inexperienced mechanic or one trying to pad a bill.

I can see it now. Guy brings the 35 years old 308 to the shop and ask for the only belts and tensioner special for $1500. Mechanic is 4 hours into the job and calls the customer to say ... you have:

    1. One busted CV boot flinging grease all over the place
    2. Weeping water pump
    3. 35 years old coolant lines
    4. 35 years old fuel lines that are "smelling of gas"
    5. Leaking oil or coolant out the head gasket between Cyl 1 and 2
    6. Ignition wires so old they take on the U shape permanently
    7. Bleed hose nipple under the plenum swelling up the hose and just about to burst
    8. Bleeding oil seals at the front and rear of the engine
    9. Shift shaft weeping oil
    10. Two sagging engine mounts
    11. Rusted T-pipe at the air injection valves
    12. Rusted, pitted, holes air injection rails making a whistling noise

How much of this do you want to fix? Customer says "just the belts and tensioners, please."

This is a customer a self respecting Ferrari mechanic should never take on.

Many on here claim that they are just "custodians" to these fine machines. Act like it then.

Ditto on my '89 328. I'll repair/replace the original water pump when it needs it...same as the wheel bearings!:p

Double ditto on my '89. And I replace my air filter when it gets dirty, not when the Ferrari book says it's time to.

If you don't have a leaking wp, you do not need a new wp at the belt change.
If your cv boots are not torn, you do not need new cv boots at the belt change.

    And on and on.

If your car needs to have these things done, you should do them, but some cars just need belts. The question was how much just to change the belts and it was answered. I have just done the belts on my car 3 times. And no one on earth can look me in the eye and criticize my 308 ownership or loyalty to the model and I have put more miles on my car than 99.999% of other owners. I USE the hell out of it.

I have seen as much outright lying and outright fraud with servicing these things as I have owners deferring maintenance. That road runs both directions. Thankfully after 40 years of involvement with these cars I can see thru the ******** from a light year away.
