When I start my 458, I have been getting a very pronounced belt squeal - seems to be from the engine area, but not 100% on location. When I turn the A/C down or up, there is an effect on the noise (usually turning down, so the sound stops). Also, when the noise is present, my steering input will sometimes change the volume or quality of the squeal.

Any experience or thoughts on this one?

Probably the belt tensioner needs replacing. Covered under warranty. You may also need a new belt. Also covered under warranty.

Yes...if the belt breaks you will ruin the engine...so if it breaks stop and get it towed. Immediately.

Spoke with a tech I know about the issue - he thought it was either the belt or one of the various pulleys. Ended up going on a road rally that had been planned for some time (1,500 mi. / hit 185mph), and everything was fine. The biggest insight that the tech gave me which made me feel more comfortable about the rally was that the oil and coolant pumps are both chain-driven, so if the belt failed, there would be no immediate engine damage.
