I hear a weird sound when I first start up my 355 and start to back out of the garage. As I give it throttle, there is a sound coming from the engine bay that sounds very much like a squealing belt. This happens the first couple of times that I apply throttle and that's it. Even if I restart the car, the sound doesn't reappear. Only when the car is cold.

Any thoughts on this? Should I be concerned?

    Check:

    alternator tensioner
    a/c belt tention

Either one of those could be loose causing the squeal. It could also be the bearing for the alternator tensioner going bad. So have a looksie at those and then get back to us.

You bet, if it's the tensioner, it's a warning at you're about to have a belt failuure. Get it looked at immediately.

I say it is a loose alt-a/c belt as well. It is easy to tighten it to check it. If it was a timing belt tensioner, it would not go away after a short bit of time only after starting. It would keep making the noise at all times.

i concur... its most prob the alt/ac belt. i had the same issue. the alternator bracket was broken and the belt went completely loose.....had a similar noise only on cold starts..

    ^What he said.^

You will need to be able to get under the engine though.

Good to hear. I don't have a lift though, so this will have to go off to the mechanic... but at least it sounds like hundreds not thousands! (which is a question that comes up a ridiculous amount of times on 355s!)

All you need is a floor jack and a couple of jack stands. You just have to get the rear end up high enough to crawl under the area of the front of the engine. It is not hard to do.

On a somewhat related note (as I'm realizing I have no idea what the accessory belt layout on this car is...) Is there a 355 shop manual availalbe anywhere. Something tells me, no...

Here you go. In this picture, I had to draw in with red the long belt that runs clockwise from the crank pulley, to the idler pulley, to the alternator, then up to the water pump pulley.

At the top of the motor is the short belt that goes from the back side of the water pump pulley to the PS pump.

At the lower right corner of this picture is the short belt that goes from the crank pulley to the AC compressor.
