Just for discussion. My wife is very sensitive to exhaust smells. Both my Ferrari (befor I began my restoration) and my Pantera are carbed. She can't hardly ride in them because of the exhaust fumes. The Pantera is sealed up well, but with windows down in town it bothers her. My 02 sensor says I am running 14.7 - 14 af ratio. Don't want to lean it out any more. My question is would some high flow catalytic converters clean the smell up? f my nose were my eyes I would probably need a seeing eye dog not to mention I don't mind the smell. Also engine is in good condition not burning oil. Any thoughts I know this is an odd topic I always figured out how to get rid of cats.

    Rick,

The problem is that while carbs are much more ellegant, they cannot hold a precise A/F mixture during operation, thus the hydrocarbons out the tailpipes. Cats may be a temporary solution untill the fail due to the fluctuating mixture.

How confident are you on the condition of your engine? Assuming it doesn't have a too agressive set-up, a fresh engine in good tune shouldn't be too bad in terms of HC stink. Before you play with cats, check all of the external engine seals and gaskets, a tiny amount of hot oil on headers produces quite a smell. Also, if the engine is even a little tired it may get stinky.

    Regards,

    Art S.

If you use catalvtic converters to try and clean up a dirty engine, you will trade one smell for another, rmember the "rotten egg" smell when cats were first used on cars with carbs and higher emmision standards?

Its the un-burnt hydrocarbons that stink. Modern fuels tend to make older cars run fatter (rich) with standard jetting at idle. If you jet to get the low end hydros down you go lean at high load. The net result is that they smell bad at idle and can have a tendency to foul plugs especially if running a slightly more than stock cam grind. My 365 stinks at slow speed as well. If you did put cats on the car it would probably be cherry red most of the time trying to burn all the unspent fuel in the exhaust stream which would result in a new burning smell which would be your carpets.

Good point Art , the additional heat may be a bigger problem. Thanks for everyone's thoughts. Going for the oil drip route first. If I move forward on the cats ...which I really don't want to. I will let you know. Our feline's nine life expectancy average 18 months. We live rural and they enjoy the hunting somtimes they forget where they are on the food chain. Seeing your cat stalk a 20 lb Tom turkey is rather entertaining.
