I've seen a few Shell ads on TV touting their addition of Nitrogen in their gasolines. They claim it cleans deposits on valves "regular" gasolines leave behind.

Is there any real benefit, or is it just "advertising"? If cleaning is real, are there any (other) performance benefits?

I have, for years, combined my gasoline with a mixture of compounds containing 78% nitrogen. I'm a believer.

LOL. Let's see how many understand your point.

If they sneak in nitrous oxide, then we may have something to talk about!

I suspect that the nitrogen they are talking about is an amine (or a set of amines)--like amonia. These kinds of substances, when hot, will slowly disolve away hard carbon deposits.

Most amines (today) are made by burning natural gas to create molecular hydrogen which can then be recombined with atomic nitrogen to form amines; such as NH3

Could the "nitrogen" additive be nitropropane??

Now if they added the oxygen too, then you'd really have something. ;)

For the last 25 years I have yet to find "harmful buildup" in any engine that was in my care.

Italian tune ups also minimize these issues.

The fact of the matter is the Shell gas is more than likely the same as the station down the street. the difference is the additives that are mixed in at the tank farm.

"Nitrogen" = Polyether Amines (PEAs). Chevron calls theirs "Techron".

Your car gets plenty of nitrogen; the atmosphere is 78% nitrogen

You spoiled the surprise. I wonder how many Shell gasoline buyers think it's some sort of premixed NOS?

but that's like saying you drink hydrogen and oxygen.

obviously shell isn't advertising that air is mixed with their gas.

Did you know that dihydrogen-monoxide is responsible for the majority of drownings?

Shell station in Gardner or Edgerton KS has a sign NO ETHANOL in their gasoline!
    That would give better mileage.

Don't know about the nitrogen, but this is a true statement as I have a friend who's wife works buying crude for Exxon Mobil. The only difference between the gas at the stations is the additives put in the trucks at the tank farms...who knows what really makes a difference.

That being said I try to always use Mobil or Shell. Great marketing job by those guys...:p

Wide open throttle for a few minutes?

Actually, an Italian tuneup is to weaken the throttle return spring while making no other changes. See French letter, and Dutch courage.
