It says "In both cases, the numbers have been attributed to big investments made by the companies."

After adding the development expenses and necessary investments and factory upgrades, the actual cost per car severely exceeds the selling price of any car.
How soon it goes from Red to Black depends on the volume of production and subsequent sales.

yes i understand the concepts of R&D etc, but my point was how much R&D goes into a Bentley when they share already so much with VAG and charge around 200k per unit? What does Bentley develop that is their own tech or engineering? (Honest question).

Exotic high end car business is super tough. Lots of overhead, very low volume, competition is very fierce. Doesn't surprise me.

+1 I would have assumed, perhaps wrongly, that Bentley, Audi, Lambo [and Bugatti] all get to share a large % of their engineering, engine fabrication tech and electronics. ECUs, brakes, suspension components, etc.
