I believe "Dying on the vine" was the expression my MB salesman used when I asked him the last time I was at the dealer.

All the R-Class is, is a Chrysler Pacifica with MB badging on it.

    Cheers,
    Aaron

I've only seen two since they went on sale, one I saw driving, the other in a garage. Don't think it caught on. Perhaps it was the ugly design?....

I've driven one and it's not bad. I think the problem is that for the $70k price of a well optioned R-class, it has to be a lot more than "not bad". I expected to buy one, but the driving experience was not at all remarkable- I drove the R500 up here in Denver and it felt sluggish and BIG. We're the target demographic for the R-class (MD/PH.D with 4 kids), but it just didn't click for us. I had my wife look at the R-class, the Volvo XC-90, the Toyota Sienna, and the Honda Odyssey. Surprisingly, she liked the Odyssey best, and there was really no price consideration. We ended up getting an Odyssey for less than half the money compared to the R-class, and it is actually a great car. One of the big negatives of the R-class is that it holds only six people. People who buy minivans do so in order to get more than 6-person seating, generally. We have 4 kids, so having the 8 seats in the Odyssey means we can take a couple friends or the grandparents along without bringing a second car. My wife loves it, and we got it for $4k under sticker.

I saw a black R350 with tint only on the rear windows (legal tint in CA). It looked like a hearse.

My mom wanted to get one. I said, don't.

Also, when you see one.......think about the Chrysler Pacifica.....see the resemblance?

I've actually seen a bunch of people buying them around here, but that may be because of the crazy lease deals they're putting on them.....something in the range of $3-400/month for a 350. Ugly as poop though.

well i love it ! the missing element for me, (or i would have bought it already) is that it doesnt have seven seats. however, they finally woke up and will start offering a bench seat in the middle to make a total of 7 at the end of the year.

in top trim its like an s class that can seat more people.

The local dealer here referred to the "R" Class as the "Rebate" Class..........because that is the only way they can sell them.

I considered getting an R too but went with the Odyssey route as well. The Odyssey rocks! It is way better for hauling the family. It'll be more realible for sure. Packaged with the $1200 8/120k miles Honda warranty, all I have to do is change the oil to keep it running.

Now our monthly 9 hour trip to Vegas is not so bad anymore.

Interesting observation. I was talking with a couple of friends the other day (they both have young children) and they were discussing minivans. The R class did come up in the conversation, but somehow they both ended up with the Honda. One of them just bought a brand new Oddyssey and I must say, when my minivan days come along, that is where my money is going. They are some nice vehicles.

It seems to me that the biggest knock is the price tag. The people I know in my age group (late 20's / early 30's) can't justify spending 70k on a vehicle after they have kids, much less on a minivan. I find myself wondering who the hell were they targeting when they made/priced that thing???

It isn't actually based on the Pacifica at all.

But it is hideous, and overpriced.

It looks like an Odyssey so if you're considering an R you may as well go with the Honda and save lots of money unless you just have to have a 3-point star. The new GL looks like a bigger Pilot too. Nothing special there either. Seems like Benz is getting its inspiration from Honda these days, though I do love the CLS.
