Bernie critized Schumacher for giving incredibly boring interviews. And Bernie commends Eddie Irvine and Jacques Villeneuve as drivers who made controversial and colorful statements speaking their minds in comparison.

Both points I couldn't agree more.

So, let's hear it from you guys.

Schumacher lets his driving do the talking. I don't like controversial interviews for the sake of controversy. The action should be on track, not behind a table.

Villeneuve & Irvine were both made their reputations when they had the best equipment (JV- Williams, EI - Ferrari) when they didnt have the best and still made the same sort of comments they just looked stupid (Villeneuve's comments this season about Sauber and Massa being a good example)

MS certainly does the talking on the track. No question. I only wish he'd speak more often his mind in interviews and less corporate PR.

To be fair, this is not just a MS issue, it is a sign of the time and all the corporate/sponsor $$$ involved. Which is something of all people Bernie should understand.

I guess Bernie's point is, that if you have reached the untouchable level of a seven times WC, you don't need a press secretary anymore to answer questions. Ferrari fired Prost, but they would never do the same to Michael.

Coming from Bernie, it doesn't suprise me.
If you listen to Micheal, not only is he diplomatic, he also speaks highly of everyone on the team. he never forget to thank every one.

His results do speak for themselves.

Why is it, that people want to change other people to statisfy their own needs for self gratification.

Bernie should look back at his own F-1 history, when he got started and remember what was said about him.

I agree. Micheal is really smart when it comes to interviews. He doesn't say too much to wear the media would twist his words around. By the way, speaking of Micheal's interviews, how come here in the U.S. he has not been any shows such as David Letterman, Oprah and various others?

Aside from being little known here, it might be a timing issue. Living in Europe he only comes here for the races, which he normally combines with vacation.

Also from all I heard he loves the relative anonymity in the States and might want to keep it that way by not appearing on Letterman.

I think Mansell only made it to the Late Show when he was driving in CART, but not while he was driving in F1.

Damon Hill and David Coultard were both on Letterman and Leno respectively. Coultard made a funny when he was talking about being on the drivers safety board with MS, but that they kept running into each other.

Boring???????? How about Kimi? You can barely understand what he is saying because he talks sooooooo low, and he sounds like he needs to blow his nose. F1 is about exciting racing, not exciting interviews.

60 minutes, or Dateline (one of those types of news shows) did an interview with Schumi like a year or so ago, twenty minute deal IIRC. Pretty boring questions... "How are you so good at what you do?", etc. - MS replied something along the lines of "inate ability and hard work." Yawn.

He definitely let his racing do the talking this weekend. I think a lot of the boring interviews stem from the sport itself just not being as exciting as it used to be. It's hard to have a controversial interview when everyone is out there tip toeing around, with the FIA reviewing every move mercilessly. Anytime anything remotely interesting happens, that stupid ticker tape with "racing incident between car #7 and car #6 will be reviewed post race" comes on at the bottom of the screen. Boring drivers in a military regimented structure leads to boring racing and even more boring interviews...

That said, this weekend had shades of brilliance, and I feel like it's going to keep getting better for at least the rest of the season.

Actually a very good point. Remember all the outbursts from Balestre about Senna, Lauda and Prost speaking their minds and how they would fine them, call them in to Paris to apologize, revoke their licenses and nonsense like that?

I bet that is part of the problem as well.

I think the driving should to the talking. Look at Irvine, gave great interviews but was a wanker behind the wheel(waiting for feedback on that one, lol). I'd rather win 7 titles and give boring interviews.

I think we are expecting too much from drivers nowadays. I was trying to put myself in the place of Schumacher who in a given year has to:
    - race 19 weekends a year
    - test for several weeks in a year
    - attend numerous press conferences where dumb journalists abound.
    - repeatedly deny he is retiring
    - attend PR session for Ferrari
    - Do some advertising work for sponsors
    - do work on behalf of other responsibilities - UN ambassador, San Marino ambassador
    - personal finances
    - be with the family
    - pet the dog Flic(?)

In all of this turmoil we expect him to give colorful responses to questions, sign every autograph. I think it is too much to expect a normal human being to do all this. The fact he has done so much with humility is something special.

Michael is an old hand and knows that if he says something controversial, he will get 10X the questions next time. Thus he takes the safe path - very understandable.

And as for boring interviews - virtually every other driver comes across more stilted and boring - E.g the erudite Mika or Kimi :)

As for Michael giving back to sport, I can count on memories such as Spain 96, Hungary 98, Suzuka 2000, and many others where his driving did all the talking and inspired so many people around the world. I am sure you would agree Andreas :)

LOL. Kimi is always interesting to watch. It cracks me up everytime.

It would be nice if Schumacher did more in North America as far as TV shows go. I would love to see him on Letterman. Although, at the same time, I respect his decision not to do that. In "The Driving Force" Schumacher stated that not too long ago he went to Las Vegas with his family on vacation and was only confronted by a couple people during his whole trip.

I remember Montoya on Letterman. I also remember I stayed up late to watch it when I had to get up early. Man was I pissed off. I should have taped it so I could play it back when I have trouble sleeping. While Schumacher wouldnt be as "exciting" as some of Lettermans guests, it would still be interesting to watch him because he usually has intelligent things to say. Montoya definitely does not!

Piquet pulled some crazy stuff. Remember that Playboy interview where he badmouths Senna. Talk about dirty laundry and mindgames.

I liked Prost and Lauda for their blunt comments. Not too garish, not too PR. Just their opinion. "The Ferrari handles like a truck." A classic by now.

Won't Bernie be the one suggesting fines when some controversial comment offends a corporate player in his play arena?

Not sure, I don't think so though. Fines are a FIA thing, so that'd be Mosley. Obviously there is a close link between Bernie and Max.

That why he got canned. But it did handle like a truck that year, lol
I wonder what they'd do if Scu ever said such a thing.
