I know this is probably stupid, but I am trying to learn more about the structure of F1. What is Bernie's title? Does he personally own/have rights to F1 racing? Is he totally the "man in charge"? Does he answer to a board? I'm interested in knowing more about this character after seeing a dreadful interview with him on SPEED before the F1 race at Indy.

Serious question! I'm new to F1 - trying to learn all I can! Have had a Ferrari for 3 years now, but never watched much car racing. Now I get up early on Sundays before church to watch Schumacher. But still don't know a great deal about F1. My wife did buy me a book for our anniversary - Michael Schumacher, the Greatest Ever - great book.

Bernie Ecclestone is the chief commercial rights holder of Formula 1. He has a net worth of over $4 billion, and is one of the richest men in England. He's also the wealthiest person involved in Formula 1.

Not bad for a kid who quit school at 16 to persue his love of racing. :)

I also suggest you Google his name if you want to find out more.

I suggest you get a book on the history of motor sport. There are some excellent ones ... I've got 2 that come at it from slightly different angles and are great. One focuses more on the races the other the cars. There are plenty out there, but a great way to get into the passion of the sport and what makes it tick ... Bernie DOESN'T, but thinks he does ;)

Anyway Bernie is a clever bastard who has made a fortune on marketing what was already a great sport. In the old days racing was really for fun or for manufacturer prestige ... Bernie has tried to remove the sport from racing and turn it into a Reality TV show.

He has been very successful at making himself and many others involved with F1 very, very rich ... but due to the playing with the true natural of sport slowly weakened the 'show'.

Now they are trying desperate measures to improve the show ... but as I have said many times before, you do not fnck with the rules at say the Olympics where many of the events are true races and the best win and always will. Thus the best method to improve the show is to 100% return to the fact that F1 racing is the ultimate form of man racing man, like we have for thousands of years and those that want to win need to put the effort in or go home ;) ... currently we have only 1 F1 team putting the effort in (Forza Ferrari!).

However, since then he has climbed right to the top of the F1 pyramid. In 1972, he bought the Brabham team, which earned Nelson Piquet the world championship in 1981 and 1983.

Bernie Ecclestone owes his greatest success, however, to his control over Grand Prix media rights. In the 80s, he took on the financial risks as president of the Formula One Constructors Association. A risk that paid off, since media coverage has slowly but surely built up, drawing with it sponsors and substantial profit.

In 1996, he created a new company, Formula One Management, which sells F1 broadcasting rights for the International Automobile Association, located in Geneva.

Like him or hate him, he currently owns F1. He has done a fairly decent job in expanding F1 and promoting new tracks like Bahrain and Shanghai. He is the richest man in Britain and he has had to take some difficult to get there. You can never please everyone.

The other part of F1 BESIDES Bernie is the FIA, which is the rules making side of the business.

    It's run by Max Mosely....

The two of them are old mates.....two sides of a coin.

    Husker,

You need to get out more.....come by and hang out at the Top Secret Speedy308 Race Shop sometime....we'll make small talk watching the red cars run around....it'll keep me awake 'till the end!

Bernie owns it all, now as well as steering many a race driver thru the system.."recommending" a team try them out....."Yes sir, I'll keep that in mind sir..."

    Husker,

Before you get blasted anymore... the press love to give him the title, "F1 Supremo, " simply because as mentioned, he is the majority owner in F1. He is the man in charge and as mentioned, his buddy Max, is acting Pres but is more like the iron fist where as Bernie is an approachable, always level figure who does not wish to seem biased.
I think they are doing a decent job because despite Ferrari dominance, they are trying to lower costs for less successful teams and are offering race regulations, ( ie: engine size, engine duration, driver aids, ) to try and even out the field. Everything with F1 revolves around Bernie and his tough guy image, Max.

Who is Bernie Ecclestone - One half of the "Bernie Mac" show - along with Max Mosely, the two have dominated F1 for many years and have responsible for making it the number 1 watched motorsport in the world.

Like all above me have said he has the F1 world under his fist ...
    - he is the commercials rights holder and makes decisions on what circuits are to be added/dropped, negotiates contracts with circuit owners,
    - decides how much of the TV broadcast rmoney to be given to the teams
    - makes a nuisance of himself everywhere :)

It is also interesting to note that Bernie Ecclestone ammased his entire fortune through F1 motor racing. Most other people had big seed money to get them in but Bernie did it on his own. He is a super intelligent guy and much nicer than the press and most people would make him out to be. The Sid Watkins book 'Life at the Limit' well documents how kind and concerned Bernie was to increase safety in F1 regardless of cost (most of it his cash to start).
