OK, here's what happened with this weekend's GP race (purely speculation) ... Bernie has a contract and was already paid for the rights to stage the GP. If Bernie cancels or the teams don't show up, he forfeits some of his sanctioning fee. He was waiting for THEM (the country/principality) to cancel which would entitle and/or enable him to keep the $20 million. Why are we having a GP this weekend? Because nobody blinked. This is an event that we should pray comes off without any tragedy. I know I am praying for that.

A case of damned if you do and damned if you don't.

    I hope it's worth it.

And like you I hope this goes off without any trouble.

I think the government will ensure a safe race. But it will be at the cost of the people of that country -- the govt is quite capable of crushing the opposition, and will do so because of the expected flare-ups.

It is indeed a big game of 3-way chicken: 1) The protesters know that the government is going to come down hard on them, but they are protesting anyway. 2) F1 should cancel but money dictates they won't unless the government makes the request. 3) The government isn't budging for the protestors or F1 management, they are going to have the event at any cost.

Sounds about right on all counts.

Bernie wants F1 to go global. Be careful what you wish for.

This is the problem when you get so much $$$ involved you HAVE to go to unsavery places like the ME... its a powder keg all that needs is a spark.

Bernie cant have all the $$ and no responsibility... F-1 is now a politicized sport....

Martin is only saying that because he displeased his Bahrainian overlords last year by being outspoken against the Bahrain GP ;) I think the royal family owns a pretty big chunk of McLaren.
