Oh no, I'm on the kill list again! I only just got off it when one of Nicky's friends asked me at a party why it was mostly male rats used in scientific research. She wondered if it was because scientists were chivalrous. Had I not been quite so relaxed and off-guard, I might have said something tactful such as: "Well, one finds chivalry never goes amiss. Also, the lack of oestrogen in the male brain makes it a far simpler model to study by removing the influence of hormonal cycles as an experimental variable." Sadly, I instead shattered her notion that it was for chivalrous reasons with the somewhat inebriated (and dangerous) comment: "No, no - we use male rats because we just don't want oestrogen ****ing up the brain!" Suddenly I realised that my rugged and manly friends were nervously edging away while their pink wine-clutching girlfriends and fiancées were closing in with ominously dark expressions. Realising my mistake, I excused myself for a momentary bathroom break and escaped out the window to freedom and safety. Well, ok, that last sentence is a lie. But it's what I would have liked to have done rather than the 30 minutes of apologising that actually happened next. I'm guessing you had a good chat about it one evening. Do tell... All the best, Andrew.
I've been trying to figure out what "over the wall" means. Is this an official residence that people familiar with Barbados would know about? All the best, Andrew.
A euphemism for gaining entrance. In fact we went through a gate and in the front door. Yes the house is very well known.
Ah ok. I thought it might have had some local significance, as if there was a famous wall about. lol All the best, Andrew.
Don't know for sure, but a couple of guesses 1) Sid is under an NDA or some other restrictive contract which prevents him from disclosing some info that his wife could. 2) His wife has written other biographies, so it may be legitimate that she is the author and he is just the source 3) Maybe Bernie is more amenable to discussing stuff with her I ordered the book for my brother for Xmas, but it hasn't arrived yet. I will let you guys know how it is, as I am sure I'll get to read it after him. There is another bio of Bernie coming out in a month or two. It was written by a guy who does "exposé" stories on corporate mischief and such. I pre-ordered that one. Supposedly the Watkins book paints Bernie in a good light, as a good natured by shrewd businessman who can play hardball when necessary... and the other book paints him as a scheming, backstabbing weasel who would sell his own mother for a buck.
Thank you very much. It seems that what we really need is a book about the writing of these two books. David
The only question I have about Bernie is whether he was part of the train robbers or not and that question is unlikely to be covered in his autobiography. And yes, I know he explains it away somehow and it can be googled. But that still doesn't answer the real question: Was he?
Someone in F1 who doesn't have an issue with Bernie? That must narrow the pool of suspects. I hope you don't mind my attempt at humor. I don't expect, or want, you to betray a confidence.
One of my uncles had a carpet store (more or less) next door to this "dealership" [It was the archetypal shady used car dealer. "Taken as seen", "no money back, no guarantee" etc.] He had an interest in motorsport and watched Bernie loading beat up Ford Anglia's and the like into the transporter - Like most teams, never had enough money. Then the Great Train Robbery Happened. The next season Bernie's team had *lots* of money...... I dunno, but my uncle was *convinced* he was at least one of the never caught "masterminds"....... The closest I believe he's ever admitted to being was giving one of the perps a gig making a silver trophy after he was released - Apparently the guy was a friend from way back and Bernie wanted to "help him out". Bernie "deathbed confessions" would be the book I'd read! Cheers, Ian
Without Bernie, there would be no modern F1. Every F1 fan wants to be just like Bernie when they grow up...even the ones that spout out about how much they hate him...
Why not? He is very powerful, appears to be healthy and happy and looks fairly good for his age. I hope I'm just like that when I'm his age.
