    Hey Everyone,
I am looking into taking the 3 day racing course at Bertil Roos next summer. Anyone taken it and have any feedback? Thanks in advance.

    Jon,

I've done the half day and it was a blast! I was going to do the 5 day for an scca license but I wanted to use the money for something else this summer. I would do the five day, get the license and then you could race their cars, or your own afterwards. Im responding on my cell phone forgive grammer/format.

As for Bertil Roos, I think you get your moneys worth. They really work with you, and i feel they have great instructors.

Can't you get a license in 3 days? Escaping my kid responsibilities for a 5 day course will be a hard sell. Jim, we should take the course together next year!!!

I did the 3-day course at the Lightning track at NJMP this summer. Had a great time and learned alot. Definitely improved my understanding of fast driving, track/corner evaluation and vehicle dynamics. I highly recommend it. The instructors are great. The class was pretty small with 3 drivers to each instructor. You get plently of seat time - you are pretty beat up and tired at the end of 3 days. The FF2000's are the real deal. You have a vintage racing license at the end of 3 days. Bertil Roos is pretty adament that one should not be able to get a competition SCCA license after a three day course. They take racing and driving education pretty seriously. I am definitely doing the 2-day advanced at NJMP next summer. On another note, I wasn't going to get an in-car video DVD but at the last minute changed my mind. I have watched that video about 10 times and love it, so my last bit of advice would be to do the same.

I took the 1 day at Pocono last year. It was fun, but conservative...

The Formula 2000 cars were prepared quite well though.

I got black flagged 5 times in one session...following too close, "dangerous" moves, gratuitous powersliding, etc.

It would be fun to do with a bunch of friends...that could get nutty.

and your Delta pledge name shall henceforth be . . . . "black flag"

has anyone done both the Bertil Roos 3 day course as well as the Skip Barber 3-day competition course that comes thru VIR a couple of times a year?

    Birdman,

The Bertil Roos program is one of the best racing schools out there. Their staff is very knowledgeable and their curriculum is outstanding. I used to instruct for the program a few years ago, so I've got first-hand knowledge of what goes on and how it's run. Definitely a program I would pick over the alternatives.

When you go - tell them Guy Cosmo says hello - I go way back with those guys. (you'll probably catch heat for 'knowing' me!)

Enjoy it - I'm sure you'll have the time of your life!

    Guy,
Will I get the super duper special treatment if I mention your name...or will they give me the crappy car and put a "kick me" sign on my back? ;)

Thanks for the feedback, that's what I was hoping to hear. It just seemed from looking at their website versus what I have seen/read about Skip Barber that Bertil Roos was going to be a little bit more personal and less like a factory. It doesn't hurt that the cars are better and the price is a tad lower.

Jim, lets talk via e-mail and see if we can work out some possible dates that we can both make in the spring?? I have official wife approval to take the course next year.

This is going to be great!!

Only as a reference point, I have attended a one day, 2 Five Day Race Schools[one with my 2 sons-memories for a lifetime], and have raced in the Roos F2000 Series for 5 years now. I would highly recommend Bertil Roos to anyone interested in learning how to drive a car safely and quickly on a race track. The instruction is personalized and comprehensive. Dennis, Don, Vince et al have extensive racing experience at the Pro level and have a unique ability to effectively communicate what is needed to help one drive faster and better. There have been a number of folks in our Race Series who have attended other schools-Barber, Bondurant, Panoz etc. Each has said that none approach the degree of value for time spent as Bertil Roos. Although the cars are different, what you will learn will be directly applicable to any track work[DE's etc] you may do in the future. I would also recommend you do the 5 Day Race School instead of just the 3 Day. A little more time and money but it will provide you the opportunity to put everything together in a true race environment. You may even find that like a lot of us, you get "hooked" and wind up joining us for the Race Series, which is another level of fun and learning.
One recommendation. I would try to schedule a school at VIR, Moroso in Florida, or NJMP in the Spring/Summer. Pocono weather can be very unpredictable, especially in the Fall. Good luck. You are going to have a BALL!!!

Thanks for the thoughts and info! I won't be taking the course until next year...no time this fall. Several people have already told me that Pocono is not the best track and to go for Virginia or NJ.

This thread has peaked my curiosity.

Does this program travel to different tracks? I'm not familiar at all..... any links to info?

This is sounding interesting and I'm also a fellow 308 guy. Jim, when Birdman comes down we can arrange a local drive perhaps on Mason-Dixon route as a small return for all the great help and tech info he has added to this site and anyone that loves the 3 series cars. Birdman, if you come down I'll take you to dinner . Your info has been invaluable to me and besides my car is filled with your parts. Bob
