At the 2004 Monterey Historics, i was lucky enough to witness Andrea Bertolini (the Ferrari F1 test Driver) use Michael Schumacher's F2003 do 6 laps on sunday! He was trying to break a lap record of 1:07.22, but he only managed to get 1:09.185! still close but no cigar. It was my first time EVER seeing an F1 race around a track! WOW what an experience. I have too many pictures lol, hopefully i can get around to posting them soon. Just got back tonight. Ran into Jordan, Rick and Mark, had a great time at Laguna Seca! Hey jordan you missed out on Sunday, if u weren't there, couldn't find you.

Helio Castroneves, in a Champ car (MY 2000 according to Google) holds the 1:07.722 record.

Bertolini's drive was, by the way, exhilarating, even though they weren't super-hot laps. On the 'cool down' lap, he put the car in neutral, bounced it off the rev limiter and launched it down every straightaway (then braked for the next set of crowds at the next straightaway). The sound was just incredible! Not having been to a circuit with a gridfull of F-1 cars, I can only imagine what that would sound like.

I also have not heard an F1 car before!

The sound is still in my head! Wow, what a sound!
The rev-limiter launches were ear piercing, in a good way! :)

I get a kick out of all the individuals who wear ear plugs when such a fantastic car is taking a few hot laps. For Gods sake, take those damn things out!!! Listen to the car, enjoy the sound.

Right on. I had a RX7 that my friend and I were turning into a SOLO car. We ripped the exhaust off the thing and ran an open header for a few days. My God! I could not even think, much less drive the car (even with my helmet on)!!! The thing sounded like a tin can full of rocks being kicked by a ten year old boy! Unlike the F2003, it did not sound good at all. It was not a joyfull event!

The thing I don't get is...how can a 3 year older Champ car be almost 2 seconds faster than a world champion F1 car? Two seconds is almost an eternity.

I don't recall Bertolini being a world champ driver you see......yah the car is really fast but he scrubbed off too much speed on sharper turns. I was on turn 11 and from what i saw, he took his sweet time on that turn before the straight.

Oh and Sting, i love 1993-95 RX7's, i think they are great cars for what they are. I love rotary's with all my heart, what an engine!
What year was your RX7? PM me

If I remember right it was a 1984 GLX or something like that (the last year of the first gen with the disc rear brakes). It was alright, bought it for $250 bucks, painted it with three shades of Krylon and sold it for $450 three months later (just too much money would have been invested in a two hundred and fifty buck car to make it a real SOLO car, IMO).

Yeah, two seconds around Laguna is HUGE. He either was not trying very hard or he simply really did not care about the track record.
