Just catch the high speed train between the big cities. You can hire a car when you are in the North. https://www.trenitalia.com/tcom-en/Frecce/Frecciarossa The 1000 Miglia is on during May, you should organise your trip around it Image Unavailable, Please Login As a few others mentioned ZTL Zones in Rome, Florence, Milan and Pisa will snap you instantly with fines as they have cameras at all entrances. https://www.visitflorence.com/tourist-info/driving-in-florence-ztl-zone.html Image Unavailable, Please Login
One very good site to hire cars is www.autoeurope.com, it's kinda of a broker that shows the best deals. In the autostrada yes, it has nothing interesting to see, but if you take some provincial roads you can see some nice sights and get into some nice local restaurants. In fact it depends. At autoeurope.com (do not mistake with europecar) you can get some great deals, like a BMW 3-series touring for 16 euros per day. If you are alone, then the train will be cheaper, but for a couple or family of 3 renting a car will be more economical. Well, don't be surprised if you get a ticket soon. The Tutor System is based on an AVERAGE speed measurement between the gantries, it's not a single point speed trap. Italian traffic fines take a long time to be mailed but they will reach you sooner or after.
When the Tutor system is active, there are overhead displays saying that the system is on. Really no excuse to get caught!
I have few regrets in life but a major one of them is 'not getting off my sofa in Treviso to go see the start of the MM'....
One of the highlights our mt Grand Tour in 1996 was spending a few days and nights in Brescia to witness scrutineering and the start of that years MM Seeing Stirling Moss in some old Merc was a bit meh Seeing Fabio in an old Ferrari was great The owner/driver of a beat-up old Cisitalia was an eccentric ebullient character who was very popular with the crowd and the other drivers - I was pleasantly surprised to see his car still going strong a few days later as he was driving it in a very spirited fashion heading up the hills out of Florence Sent from my iPhone using FerrariChat.com mobile app
