I know technology changes faster than I can keep up.

I was wondering what you guys know or use to copy your DVD's.

I have about 500 and they take up too much room. Years ago I ripped all my CD's to mp3 and it's been great having my music stored /safe / and easily available. Not to mention less weight!

What is the equivalent for DVD's? I'd like to keep the quality the same so little or no compression but remove the subtitles / previews / other languages if possible.

I'm leaning towards a stand alone device instead of a computer, but interested in your thoughts.

Here's one product that interested me:

Any idea how long it takes to copy a movie? This could take awhile.......

what about a 500 Disc DVD player? Put them all in, spend the afternoon programming the player and go. Just a thought.

I've never ported my movies from DVD to Digital media. I'm sure there are plenty of way's to do it, but when I use to do it for my zune it took awhile (around 45 minutes) to convert the DVD to a format that would work.

I have a 400 disk player and that's been a good solution, but now I want to convert them as I have well over that many dvds.

BTW- I had a couple of 300 disk cd players and that solution worked until I mp3'ed all my songs....

    Much better

Probably not all that relevant, but I use a program called ImTOODVD that will rip
a DVD down to about 400 MB on average - but that's using the max compression.
I used it to rip about 75 DVDs to store on SDHC cards - I have 1 32gb and 2 16gb
cards and have all 75 movies in my laptop case to watch DVDs on airplanes (where
i spend a LOT of time!).

But you can use the program to rip full quality if you wish - haven't tried it....
The good part is it assembles the movie into a single file (no chapters), unlike
    other rippers.

Again, probably not the thing you seek but thought others reading the thread
might be interested. I think their web site is www.imtoo.com - no affiliation

I use Handbrake, but I'm a on Mac.

Maybe they have a PC variant? I'll check that.

    edit: http://handbrake.fr/downloads.php

Also, on my PC I used "magicdvdripper" to take all of my DVDs in to iPod formatting, although some of them didn't turn out as I'd hoped (too small, bad quality, etc).

Get AutoGK. It's pretty much idiot proof. I'd recommend looking into x264 encoding, and I'm not 100% sure AutoGK does it or not. (It def. does DivX/ Xvid encoding).

+1. you can use Nero also to back up 1 copy of a dvd you own to a external hard drive. helps to protect the disks from damage, and its way easier to tote the movies you like around with you.

many vehicles now have dvd players in them to entertain the passengers on trips. the heat and vibration can damage the disks easily. many people i know leave their new disks at home, and use the copy to watch in the suv or with the kids.

I tried just about every free app going then bought the Cucusoft converter, it really has been excellent, combined with a WDTV player and you can rip them all to a hard drive and play them on your TV via HDMI. It also converts movies to my iPhone to watch when I travel.
