Is the 2006+ BMW M5 the best daily driver ever? To be more specific, if your criteria are: 1) It must be fast 2) It must have four ADULT sized seats (midget seating in the back need not apply) 3) It must be reasonably reliable for 10k miles of driving a year I've been looking at the spec's on the V10 M5. On paper, they're impressive: 0-60 in 4.1sec, 0-100 in 9.5sec, 1/4 mile in 12.4 seconds - Faster than 360 Modena on all 3 counts. http://www.fast-autos.net/vehicles/Ferrari/2000/360_Modena/ http://www.fast-autos.net/vehicles/BMW/2006/M5/ Anyone have any thoughts on criteria 2 or 3 from personal experience? Better ideas for the next daily driver, given those 3 constraints? Thanks in advance, Techmogul
I have used an M5 as daily drivers for over a decade now...first a 1991 e34 M5(~75k miles), then an 2000 e39 M5(~117k miles) and now my current 2006 e60 M5(16k miles so far). They have all three been very reliable cars, very fast and fun to own and drive. My new e60 M5 with its V10 and SMG shifting is a blast on the road and/or at track events. It will transport five in luxury yet out run and out handle most sports cars and some exotics...the only thing about it I don't love is the 12.5mpg average I get on my daily 42 mile round trip commute. It does get 22mpg on the highway with the cruise set at 80mph though...IMHO the BMW M5 is the best daily driver on the market...at least for a car guy!
Went to look at one this past summer, but the dealer only had the 550i in the showroom. Were considering purchasing one until my wife sat in it while the salesman pointed out all the features. Unfortunately, three important items stood out that were the eventual "deal killers": 1) the seats did not adjust upward high enough for my wife to see comfortably over the dash (she's petite -- under 5 feet), 2) the plastic flip-out cup-holders were a big turn off to her, and 3) it was not available in the "burgundy" (dark red) color -- only the 7-series was (which had real cup-holders btw). She didn't want the 7-series as she felt it was a bit too large for daily use. If BMW were to address some of those items, we might be interested.
i drove my old maser qp III daily for two years. i bought the car in the secondary market w/ only 10k miles...essentially a brand new car. it was a charriot!!! it was an opulent living room on wheels that got huge attention from the ladies and motorheads alike. not as fast as the qp IV but bigger and nastier!!! that is my vote based on the requirements of a real back seat. now...the best daily driver of all time independent of rear seating must consider the 930 turbo. fast, comfy, wild, responsible, fast, reliable and fast!
Get a Miata. All that in performance & handling in a sweet pure no frills flawless package. A real sports care here.
FYI, the cheap plastic flimsy flip-out cupholders were a big turnoff...especially considering the price of the car. Items like this are important to many potential customers who plan to use these as daily drivers (with kids / passengers onboard). I merely mentioned it as part of a discussion about the 5-series BMW's, and thought it might be relevant to the initiator of this thread and/or others following the discussion. Didn't realize that F-Chat members' opinions were now considered "crap" on this board either. And, yes, there is an "ignore" feature on this website -- feel free to use it and add me to your list -- I'll gladly do likewise. Bah-humbug...
Eric... I think the issue here is that a thread about BMWs and such was started in the General Ferrari Discussion forum. There's an "Other Cars" forum down in the Off Topic section where threads like this can thrive. Certainly not a big deal, just kind of annoying... Have a Merry Christmas...
Why does somene need 4 seats for a daily-driver? Are you commuting with 3 other adults on a daily basis? I can count on one hand the number of times I would have liked to have adults in my back seat each year. A reasonably sized 2+2, such as the 612 previosuly mentioned, would be a dreamy daily-driver, and my goal dream car. Currently I have a Maserati GranSport as a daily-driver and it works flawlessly. If you have access to a larger vehicle when you want it, ie: wife's SUV, or a second car yourself, then a 2+2 is perfect! BTW, BMWs rot.
I respectfully disagree. I sat in the back of a 612 and found it very comfortable - and this was before I dropped 40-or so pounds...!
Would love another Ferrari. Interested in thoughts on how the 456/612/599 stack up against the Hun across those three areas. Thanks in advance.
While the cup holders are partially plastic, they have a metal frame and are far from flimsy...and with the "full leather" option they look great IMHO...and when closed, its just an extension of the leather dash... they put the cup in the perfect place for both the driver and passenger. And a dark red color interior is available for an e60 M5...it is called "Indianapolis Red" and looks pretty darn good to me...especially with a Silverstone Silver exterior
If you don't mind sharing, how tall/heavy are you? How long did you ride in it? How did you find the ride across the range from stiff to airy. Thanks in advance.
There was recently a thread just like this one. Someone was considering a 456 or a 612 or a few other options as a daily driver. The 612 seemed to make the most sense as the back seats are far better than the 456, it's light years ahead of the 456 in terms of technology, speed, braking, performance ...and it's a Ferrari.
IMHO, the e60 M5 is the best looking M5 to date. In fact, the innovative Bangle styling cues have now been copied by a lot of other marques including MB, Honda, Infiniti...
