Great thread! My best driving experience was on Trinity Highway (Highway 299) in Northern California in Aug. of this year. Some 100+/- miles (total) of second and third gear turns through the mountans while tracing the path of the Trinity River some four hundred feet down beside you. Steep grades straight into hair-pin turns sweeping upwards the the right or left and then a quarter mile of straight tarmac into more sweeping lefts and rights, back up another part of the mountains and on it goes... ... Anybody with the chance to drive this road should jump at it. Nothing to regret. Weaverville is pretty much the mid-point and is a fantastic small town to grab a bite to eat before carving up another hour and a half of some of the best roads the country has to offer. It's seriously what the links below show. Amazing. http://www.dalecroy.com/hwy299/DSCN3546.JPG http://www.dalecroy.com/hwy299/DSCN3543.JPG http://www.dalecroy.com/hwy299/DSCN3540.JPG _J
the Historic Columbia River Highway in Oregon. Highway one from San Fran to LA Of course Yellowstone, and Glacier national parks Italian ss26 through the Aosta Valley to the Mount Blanc tunnel. that's a start, but there's just so much potential on this beautiful planet!
Will take some pictures of some of the best roads down here at the southern tip of Africa, some really great roads that combined with the scarcity of law enforcement can create driving heaven.
If everyone could give some start and finish points.. it is so much more of an experience to follow a road on google earth.. Jan try it on my route .. it gives a real feel of what the road is like.. Jan
Great idea, but isn't there a thread like this already? It's got stacks of exquisite drives in it. Found it: http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=212287&highlight=Chapman%27s+Peak
Years ago I got to drive through Uruguay in my Mitsubishi 3000GTVR4 w 500hp I was surprised how nice the roads were with very little traffic and no cops You could go as fast as you like Just had to watch out for a horse cart every now & then
This site is keeler for rides/drives in California. It's an interactive map with hundreds of rides you can just click on for a map. I always liked HWY 198 for some wide open fun. http://www.pashnit.com/ridemap/ridemap.php
That's *awesome* dude - Thanks for sharing. I've driven quite a few of those roads near me (South Bay) but there's some gems in there. Cheers, Ian PS - Top Gear did a "best driving road" episode once - Decided it was somewhere in Switzerland IIRC - Clarkson made some comment about the Brits should take over as it wasn't fair that the Swiss had *the* road.

from sun valley idaho take rt 75 north through sawtooth to challis national forest to rt 21 south through boise national forest to boise. absolute sheer MAGIC.
California: CA Rte 198 (as already mentioned by someone) from Coalinga to Rte 25. Great variety of curves and mostly fairly short straight stretches. A couple of nice long straights. Very interesting where the road carves through the San Andreas fault. Rte 25 from 198 to Hollister. One of the greatest roads. Very fast for first 15 miles or so. Then almost any type of curve interspersed by straights. Nice elevation changes. Very fast again for a few miles as you get closer to Hollister. Empty. Motorcycles on Sundays. Rte 58 from McKittrick ((on Rte 33) Santa Margarita. Early part tight curves, elevation changes, demands attention. Later fast straights with right-angle turns through farmland. Rte 33 from Taft to Coalinga. Alternative to I5, if you can't stand the I5 traffic anymore. San Diego County road S2 from Scissors Crossing to Ocotillo (on I8). Great mix of fast straights, open curves and a few tight curves. Elevation changes through desert washes. Fast, but very demanding if you go fast. Empty on weekdays. Rte 36 from Red Bluff to US101 south of Fortuna. Tremendous variety of curves and straights, major elevation changes. Empty on weekdays. Very remote. Rockslides in rain. Arizona State Rte 71 from Aguila (on US60) to Congress. Fast, very fast in places. State Rte 89 from Congress to Prescott. Great variety, elevation changes, fast in a few places, very curvy close to Prescott. Demanding to drive fast. State Rte 73 from Carrizo Junction to Fort Apache (through Apache Indian reservation). Watch for tribal police, usually very empty. State Rte 260 from Camp Verde (on I17) to State Rte 87. Elevation change, open curves, fast. New Mexico Indian Rte 9 from US 491 to State Rte 197. Rte 197 to Cuba on US 550. Remote, very varied, fast in places, tricky in others. Don't drive faster than you can see because pavement can be rough around curves and through arroyos. Mostly very empty. Sate Rte 96 from US 550 (a little north of Cuba) to US 84. Great drive. US 84 from Espanola to Chama. State Rte 4 from San Ysidro (on US 550) to White Rock (near Los Alamos). Scenic, challenging road, varied. Empty on weekdays.
