The Best Driving Road Ever: In Illinois?
Thanks....very tempting, but I don't think I can make it this trip. I'll aim to make the next one though. I would love to join someone on a drive sometime.
Since the weather did not cooperate last weekend, we are rescheduling the Galena drive for Saturday October 3rd. It will be nice to go at this time of the year to take advantage of the cooler temperatures and fall colors. If weather does not work out on that Sat, the backup date will be Sunday Oct 4th. We will be meeting early in the morning and will plan to be back in the chicago area by early afternoon. Please PM me if you are interested in joining and I will send more details. Include your name, phone, email so I can contact you if anything changes.
Had a chance to run route 2 from Rockford all the way down to Dixon yesterday. Great road - beautiful this time of year with the leaves changing and views of the river the whole way down. Great road surface with lots of smooth twists and turns. Highly recommended if you haven't done it. The only negative is that this road is somewhat crowded with lots of trucks. Makes it a bit stressful. Just before Dixon, I turned East on Lost Nation Road and followed that up North to River road just south of Byron then 72 back east. Roads were excellent the whole journey. Weather was beautiful. Also tried the drive from New Glarus to Mr. Horeb last weekend, but didn't really have enough time to explore the area. I liked that it was remote and not highly trafficked. Some of the roads were good but other were pretty bad. I need to take more time up there.
Anyone gone to Castle Rock State Park? Debating driving out there or Starved Rock from downtown Chicago tomorrow morning. Welcome to have anyone join us as well.
My drive down Route 2 yesterday went right through Castle Rock and it was great. Not very long, but if you do it definitely take Route 2 all the way down or up. I found Starved Rock to be slow, scenic and crowded. Not really a run drive by my definition. But I did manage to find some nice roads on the way there. If you made the run today, please post your thoughts on either.
Went to Starved Rock. Not too much on the drive from Chicago, however, the weather was great and enjoyed hiking around the park. I'll have to do a Route 2 run at some point and swing by Castle Rock. bumping up a 3 year old thread So did everyone end up going to Galena? 2.5 hours away from where I am, is it worth it? Any where closer to chicago that is suitable?
Hi guys - I know this is an old thread, but I wanted to breathe some life into it and see: 1. If there were any other recommendations for good driving roads in Northern Illinois (I live in the western suburbs) 2. See if there would be any interest in putting together a drive, maybe even making it a semi-regular thing (when the weather improves obviously) I just joined the FCA and will start to engage there, but wanted to check in this thread also. Cheers!
Mike Salins is the Route God for FCA Illinois. I have a feeling that the Mike in the original post is him. I went on 3/4 drives last year and expect to do more in 2025. Welcome to FCA
Thank you. Great to know! If it’s ok, would you mind including me going forward in the 2025 plans? Looking forward to stretching the legs on the car and meeting people in the community.
