As an R32 owner I can second that... Road and Track had it right in this review "Accompanying this acceleration is an almost addictive V-6 exhaust note that encourages up- and downshifts regardless of whether they're actually necessary. A clever muffler valve opens at 3500 rpm, transforming the engine's tone from around-town mellow to open-road throaty. Think BMW M3 without the metallic twang." http://www.roadandtrack.com/article.asp?print_page=y&section_id=3&article_id=1330&page_number=1&preview=

Good thread here with links to stock and aftermarket R32 exhaust sounds http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=1485775

This vid is a little big.. but worth it (right click, and save as....) http://www.projectech.net/videos/r32/r32-zion1.avi

i disagree with the e46 M3 sounding bad (yes, i am biased)

i love the high reving rasp and the M3 has a very unique exhaust note

you can tell a ferrari with your eyes closed by the exhaust note
you can tell an M3 with your eyes closed by the exhaust note

...you can't say that about a lot of cars and that means something

While I agree that it has a unique exhaust note, this is due to the fact the sound it makes is in the nature of inline motors. It just so happens that the sport exhause of the M3 makes it loud and pronounced enough to hear. You can get the same sound (albeit not as audible) out of any inline engine if you push it hard enough.

Totally agree with you. I saw one a week ago riding past me and it must of had sports exhaust because it was LOUD and sounded like a race car.

ugh, i really don't like the noise those things make when the loud pedal's on the floor. not saying it's a BAD sound, just that it doesn't sit right with me.

love the high idle on the peripheral ported (or whatever) ones, really cool, but then they rev it and i wince like i'm watching someone's voice crack on australian idol.

otherwise i'd like to try sticking a rotary in a number of light cars to get them tearing up the tarmac.

I don't know about sounding like F1 cars, but a few weeks ago I heard a Toyota Supra turbo that sounded a lot like the Toyota Eagle IMSA GTP cars.

well, here's my X1/9 with no exhaust on it... i blew the sucker clean off the previous day. :)

    http://www.users.on.net/~ashsimmonds/Xnoexhaust.MOV (8.3mb)

and a coupla the noises it used to make after a new exhaust system was put on, just commuting sounds really, i rarely used to rev it past 5000 because of carby and induction issues at the time. (currently being rebuilt, balanced, lightened, increasing CR, etc...) can't wait to get it back and give it a PROPER driving.

    http://www.users.on.net/~ashsimmonds/lapintherain.mpg (2.2mb)

and if you could be bothered (bored much? :) ) a couple little vids PRE-exhaust upgrade... though you can't hear the exhaust AT ALL. the only noise you can hear on these is INDUCTION, gotta love the IDF's. :)

The 1UZ-FE in both the early LS400s and the SC400s sounds pritty nice with the right intake system. Not sure if its quite "exotic" though. Heres a clip with just a simple intake. I have made a full cold air system and when its peaks its much louder. ill get clips of that soon.

The S2000 sounds pritty sweet too :)

Oh ya, a friend of mine had a NA 944 with a bypass valve. When closed, the car used the stock exhaust system, when open, it was just MSDS header and a short pipe. Too bad the valve we used was a POS, the weld holding the door inside broke and the valve is now useless. Vids to come. :)

I dont understand why people just dont run bypass valves. You get the best of both worlds, you can be as quiet as a mouse when its closed and run strait pipe when its open. Yes i know you loose low end power with an open system but you can just wait to open it once you get up in the revs, thats what my friend did with his 944. Plus, no one will have any idea what the heck hit em when you open the valve. it was alot of fun. :D

Here is a clip of a MKIII supra with a 1UZ-FE swaped into it. Its a fly by vid of the motor reving to about 7K

I would agree that if a G35 and an F-car are both off (as in not running), they do sound quite similar!
