456 are very cool, if you can find a good one. The 550 right now HAS to be the most "bang for the buck"... An early 308GTB? Maybe............ *lighting cutting torch*
Currently listed in the FerrariChat Classifieds: http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/vbclassified.php?do=ad&id=3083 I'm dying to add a euro 308 to my garage, without having to spend a fortune (I have to keep my Jag and Mercedes!). I do most maintanence service on my own, but would expect to thrown another 5-6G at it immediately (I don't think I'd tackle the 'belts' issue). Just curious if anyone knows a little more about it.. seems the owner is parting with it after just 1 year of ownership.
I vote brand spanking new California! Heck, the world is coming to an end 2012. Go out with a bang!!!
absolutely, positively, hands down, not even close...less than half the price of a GTC/4 it's amazing that this model flies so far under the radar. many of you know me as a die hard 400 guy, but i have a bunch of the 'unloved' Ferraris... including Mondial QV Cab, a couple of 308's, 308 GT4's and Testarossa with a Tubi... and nothing even comes close to delivering the Ferrari experience as does a 356 GT/4 2+2... made side by side with some with some of the best cars ever to come from Maranello... 246, 365 GTB/4, 365/512 BB... with the same, universally regarded, finest sounding road going motor as the GTC/4... the fact that you can take your family along is just gravy... a really fantsatic way to live the dream.
Thanks PAP! And thanks Brett for doing such a great job on her, even if you wouldn't put a Chevy V8 in it. Boy I really crack my self up.
Thanks for the nice welcome, folks. I just had my 1999 Grigio Ingrid 456MGTA in to Tim Stanford in Fort Lauderdale for an annual service. All work performed correctly, politely and economically. Also had the intake manifolds painded a Ferrari Red while under the hood. Just thought the appearance needed a little "612-like" updating, and certainly the engine needed something "Red" to remind a viewer that yes, this is a Ferrari V-12 you are looking at. I have modified every car I have ever owned, and I certainly will keep at it. Purists will be happy to lnow that these changes cane be "undone" for a more traditional look. Your thoughts ? http://i1004.photobucket.com/albums/...anifolds-2.jpg Image Unavailable, Please Login
Well, it all depends on what you want, doesn't it? Before you bash the TR you should include the 512. It's a completely different car, and in my opinion one of the best Ferrari experiences. The 550 is a better car (and is what I would consider the most car for the money) but driving a 51TR is certainly more of an occasion. 308s and 328s are great, but they are pretty small inside, and many guys today are not going to happy. The boxer is great looking and a will probably at least hold steady in price, but have you driven one? I found the drivers position to be crippling. And if diffs are a problem in TR's what about boxers? Sometimes maintenance problems are overblown. TR diffs, 355s, you get the OMG stories here but no one counts the miles and smiles of trouble free driving. I have put 16,000 miles on two 355s and 8000 on a 512 TR with little issue. Ups and downs go with the territory. Anyway, 550 is my vote.
There is your answer. Quite simple, really. Afterall, when it comes time to pay the service bill for whichever Ferrari you choose, are any of those people who have something to say going to pitch in and help pay the bill?
Thank you, Chris. I have had a little problem with the suspension, that you can see here. http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=273443
A black testarossa is hard to beat for the WoW factor. Seems like some of the threads here suggest that it is very reliable, while others suggest that you need to have 20K set aside for repairs at the drop of a hat---seriously---that has been posted here. Its certainly more iconic than a 355?
For a total combination of price, maintenance ease and cost, performance, comfort, fun, driveability and "feel good" factor, nothing can beat a nice clean 550 in the current $70-80k bracket. Nothing....
+1 this is Ferrari's little secret. Everyone overlooks this car.Better looking than a 456 and more less expensive than a 575 and only 30hp less than 575. Plus it has great room inside for us taller guys.
I have to admit I also strongly considered the Testarossa 512. I liked the V(flat)12, the lower center of gravity, the agressive, almost, iconic styling. Favorable was that there were reasonably priced low-milage examples available. Also liked the (relatively)low cost, and the sense that the depreciation was almost at an end, and that (maybe) prices would begin to rise as soon as I bought mine. What put me off was: Low milage cars were almost 20 years old, with the problems of disuse to worry about. Higher milage cars were facing often expensive servicing, and reliability questions. Car seat only two, with early 80's ergonomics. No OBD II. 80's styling. * * * * * What I liked about the 456M is: seats 2 to 4 , depending on whether or not we are talking about adults, children or midgets. Having a classic (to me) front motor v-12. Modern diagnostic systems. Subtle styling. Color options other than "arrest me red." Recent belt service, and an out-the -door price of about $40,000 for a 1999 car. Old enough to be almost fully depreciated, new enough to be reliable. * * * * * If I were in the market for a 2-place car, the 550 would be very tempting.
Hey JohnP..... I just sold another TR (1990 Black/black with 29Kmiles). Probably should have bought it myself. It was pretty sharp looking. Hope your TR is treating you well. Keep in touch. Remember, you owe me a photo! John
