Oil, Tranny, Brake, Coolant, etc. Anyone ever use evans waterless?
Lots & lots of threads on here with twice as many opinions. Search is your friend. But my '83: oil:Castrol 20w50 Brake: ATE Blue then ATE Gold (Alternating) Coolant: Prestone is fine. I run a little thinner than 50-50 Gear oil: I've tried Swepco - not happy. Tried Redline 90W NS - better, but still not great.
Why do you alternate here? Just wondering. Is it just so that you can see when you've fully flushed the old fluid?
That's precisely why one alternates between the two. However, the blue has since been recalled and will no longer be available in the US. Perhaps other jurisdictions will still have availability. There's a DOT regulation that DOT 3/4 brake fluid be clear/amber, which the blue obviously doesn't comply with.
That's why I alternate and I bought a few quarts of blue the day before TireRack discontinued it and they had it at a slightly reduced price. win win.
I have tried 5 different tranny fluids. Nothing appears to work any better than the other although I had the best shifting with cheep Valvoline. I think the Red Line is no better. I use Prestone for coolant...........and Castrol 10W40 Dino oil.
I've been using Castrol Edge 5W50 full synthetic engine oil. Aside from all the known synthetic benefits, and a lower cold viscosity to minimize startup wear, it has higher ZDDP content for classic cars to reduce flat tappet wear (camshafts).
FWIW, these are not flat tappet engines. Flat tappet engines are pushrod motors like conventional US V8s. There is very little load on OHC cam followers compared to that on a pushrod V8. A follower and a valve lifter (tappet) serve the same function but the load on the flat-tappet system is far higher. Valve springs that can maintain good contact on an ohc motor at redline would have trouble closing the valves at fast idle on a pushrod (flat tappet) motor.
