    I've been striping and rebuilding a lot of small assemblies on my 308 recently and I was curios as to what would be the best grease to use during reassembly?

    I'm talking about things such as the gearshift, gas pedal, etc. the original pieces were are bunked up with this nasty black grease. In the past I've used a high grade white lithium grease but I wasn't sure if there isn't a better option.

    White grease is usually the around the house, shop, etc. type grease. Car use is mostly for hinges and door latches. Anything else on the car I would use chassis/wheel bearing grease NLGI #2 GC-LB (mechanical assemblies, grease zerk, etc.)

    There are so many darn types of grease. I am glad this is getting some mention. I always wonder which one I should use and where. The white is Lithium grease yes? Its more "greasy" and light than the mentioned bearing grease which is more "sticky" and "thick". I always second guess myself if I have chosen the right one.

    I usually use Valvoline moly wheel bearing grease. I tried the Mobil 1 synthetic but it separates over time in a grease gun and red oil runs out making a real mess.

    Thanks for the info.

    The little things are the ones that confuse me such as simply greasing the throttle pedal pin. The gearshift is another item that seemed strange to gob up with thick, black grease.

    That chart is a great reference. I'm going to look today to find something.

    That Dowcorning table is good, but I would need a separate garage to store all of that grease. It would be benificial to know if they have one tube that would be a 90% solution:)

    For small jobs, like the linkages you mention, I used GM silicone grease in a 1 oz tube. Clear, so not as much mess, and widely available. Kind of expensive and used mostly on weatherstripping, works great for small jobs and no white or black to rub off on hands and clothing. Part number 12345579, $7.65.
