I have three garage jacks, and none of them are suitable for the Dino. I have to use the factory jack, then slide the floor jack under and use that, and go through the same procedure lowering it.

What do you all think is the best jack to use? Basically, all I want to do is get under the car for oil changes and don't want to die.

I guess I could get a lift, but down that path lies madness.

Here's the business end of the floor jack, Mike. It's quite low, so will be suitable for the Dino (a tall car really). Note the wheels, which have rubber O rings riding in a groove. These prevent scoring your floor and make it a quiet jack to roll around.

And it comes in Dino Blue, too. Highly recommended.

PS: A 2-post lift is probably madness, but, if you have the room and can squeeze one into the budget, that would be highly recommended, too!

NEVER EVER use the factory jack. It can slip and damage bodywork, voice of sad experience. Buy a common scissor jack for modern cars and a soft wood block / pad that will easily store and be compact in your trunk.

Alternatively, even the $89 low profile harbor freight jack works good, easily breaks down for travel and fits under everything

I was working on my Elan earlier today, and my wife snapped a photo of our two-year-old Rottweiller Sundance in the garage. When I saw the photo, I thought I should post it, as the jack just happened to be in the photo. It almost seems Sundance was showing how low the jack is.

What a lovely photo. Thank you for sharing.

As for the jack, I use a Harbor Freight low profile aluminum jack with hockey pucks as protective spacers between the jack pad and the chassis. That said a 2 post lift is the BEST tool I have ever bought and it paid for itself dozens of times over. Also lifts always have excellent residual value so your ownership costs are very very low in the end.

2 post lifts are the domain of the smart not the insane. Think about it.

Thanks, Rob. Our two Rotts are my constant companions in the garage.

I agree completely with your view on the two-post lift. I have a "small" one that's intended for home garages without the headroom for full-sized lifts. It was a great help yesterday, when I was working on ride-height adjustments on my Lotus Elan and had to remove the wheels, use the car, then lift again. An Elan, with its backbone frame, is problematic to lift, especially with a floor jack. But the lift made short work of it (my apologies for the non-Dino photo, and of Ferrari's 1960s rival to boot).

Yes, if you have the space and can scrimp to buy it, as I did, yes, get a two-post lift.

    Andy

PS: Scott, a "puck" is that small, round thing big guys with helmets push around with sticks, when they're not hitting each other. Very strange game. Pucks apparently have many uses around a garage, but I can't get them in the tropics. (Just kidding, a long time ago, I studied at a NE school in the US, where hockey was a big thing. I watched a lot of practice sessions and games.)

    Andres,

Was thinking about you this week with all the horrible flooding in Manila. I hope that you and your family are safe. Your recent post has me thinking positive.

    All the best,

    Tom

Thanks, Tom. We're fine and weren't directly affected by the storm. The floods have receded, but relief efforts are continuing. I wish often I could do more.

    My best,

    Andres
