Best kit for Coil-On-Plug (COP) conversion for 550

Nice surprise discovery which is motivating my move to this COP kit - this is the state of 4, 5, 6 coil ends at the pack. If only this could have been discovered in the winter?! So while I hope to get in line for one of these fabulous kits (and I missed a golden chance already stupidly), does anyone happen to have these straight ends from a 456/M? I’d love to be able to drive asap with the Summer upon us. I’ll buy or even “rent” and return them once I can get the COP. (Like me, I know many like to keep all original parts…). Just to give more positive feedback on John's COP set up I drove ~700 miles over the last 3 days in unusually varying weather for the season, ranging from warm under the sun to cold in pouring rain and the engine ran like Swiss clockwork with zero ignition issue.

 

Guess who joined the club? Likely the first installation on a 456M with black covers. Ran errands all day in mixed city/highway and lots of startups. Run like a champ with no issues.

Man, I have my ignition torn apart right now (again) during my most recent major “plus” underway. I asked them last week about integrating this kit.

 

Ed, give Kingsborne Wire Werks a try. They should have those ends in stock and hopefully you can get your existing setup patched up until we can get you a COP kit.

Again, great to hear Omar. I'm glad you got the kit installed & the car is running well. Did you DIY or have it installed by your tech? Hope the installation instructions were clear.

Jeff, it's a very simple, straight forward installation. No more difficult than changing the plugs and after you're done, you'll have a worry free, reliable ignition system for the next decade or two . I think FatBillyBob's setup is approaching 15 years at this point. His was the #3 setup that we built.

 

My tech installed it in the middle of a very extensive major service. Very happy. My factory plugs were 'ok' but minor tears and cracks were apparent.

 

Minor update

More mixed driving / cold + hot starts > perfect. I have zero complaints and strongly recommend it if nothing else so you can keep the fragile OEM setup safe/secure while you run an improved setup.

This is a definite must for any one, particularly those who actually is are driving a 550/456/456m.

 

Quick update.

After fitting Fabio's 6-1 headers I built a separate harness to plug in a HKS Twin Power ignition box to boost the coils, as per John's original set up. As much as engine response and obviously the soundtrack already improved with Fabio's headers the HKS has brought yet some further improvements such as a slightly improved throttle response but most noticeably a tighter and crisper engine sound. The quicker throttle response thanks to the improved ignition set up and the better mid to top end breathing thanks to Fabio's headers have made for a more dynamic driving experience which is in my opinion far more enjoyable than the standard set up that did not really encourage changing gears because of the slightly numb throttle response and the high (perhaps even excessive, in my opinion) amount of low down torque and instant torque response.
That the various components still make for such a balanced experience make the car feels very OEM+, in my opinion.

 

How do I get on the list for the next batch of COP kits?

I believe John is directly selling them now relying on word of mouth instead of advertising publicly.

FBB- He has an account there, but hasn't been active there for a few years. I'm not sure when the last time he posted, or even looked, at that site.

 

Did you call Ricambi to see if its on a "call only custom order" status since they worked together on it in the past?

I'd go that route first.

If not then I bet FBB or Aerosurfer or one of us have John's phone and email ;-)

 

Ricambi refuses to have anything to do with John's COP kit as it is in competition Ricambi's 550 ignition wire/coil kit, which I understand. I have sent a PM to Bill59 to get him in contact with John, but he has not responded.
