If you had the money to purchase a large scale (1/18-1/12, Pocher 1/8 not an option) KIT, what would you get and why?

Some items I am considering are:
    REVELL
    1/12 Testarossa
    Pros:
Big scale fits this big car. Testarossa is just so cool.
    Cons:
Engine bay lid does not have open louvers, whole model would take a lot of scrathbuilding to make it world class.

    1/12 F2002
    Pros:
ScaleMotorsport offers a nice detail set. A winning machine is worth modeling.
    Cons:
This subject can be found in smaller scales with high detail so why make it in 1/12?

    FUJIMI
    1/16 288 GTO
    Pros:
A large scale 288 is a rarity. The GTO is one of the coolest Ferrari's around.
    Cons:
I have heard about low quality parts (wheels and other).

    TAMIYA
    1/12 312
Pros: High quality parts and detail sets available.
Cons: Not a huge fan of the 312. Would rather spend my money on another kind of Ferrari.

    MG Model
    1/18 550, 575 (Race versions)
    Pros: High quality, high detail.
Cons: #88 Prodrive is the only one worth modeling with my limited budget as it's the only one to do well at Le Mans.

Obviously I have formed my own opinions but I am open to what do you think. Have I missed one that you think is worth building?

I would say anything by Tamiya.

I have a link to some unbuild models here, among them the 1:16 Fujimi Ferrari 288 GTO, F40 and BB512.

Also the 1:12 Tamiya Ferrari 312B, 312T and 312T4. They are exceptional in detail.

There is also the 1:12 Revell Ferrari 126 C2

If you want me to try and take some more pics focussing on detail I can try and do that:)

I have to say anything by Tamiya and thumbs down for Fujimi.
Pocher's 1/8 is nice too btw, too bad they are no more available.

If you have ever built models from all the manufacturers mentioned above, I think you'd agree that Fujimi models are not that bad, in fact, they are among the better ones.

    Hey ScaleDetails,

Do you know of any examples of completed 1/12 TR's or F40's that I can look at on the web? I want to see some examples of these models before I throw down some cash.

If I did get one of these large scale kits (or a Fujimi 1/16) I would purchase a detail set from you to take it to the next level.

But I would love to see examples first.

The revell 1/12 TR is in poor quality, I built once some time ago, it is hardly to put it into a piece.... the new packing 1/12 TR by revell is using its old mold with minor modification, but overall the quality is bad, that is my comment......

here is a photo of the built up:

agree with slk99. Revell is poor in quality.
The best products comes from Japan, much of firms are the leader
    on market place.

Save your money on the big models and apply it to a 1:1 version...

After some searching I think Revell's 1/12 F2002 offers the best opportunity to create a large scale materpiece.

Check out these bulding notes from the Modeler Site. Based on what I can see a high detailed model can be created from the Revell kit with some extra work.

I have been building the Revell F2002 for sometime now. I am not a master builder but I can tell you the kit needs lots of work to make the parts fit. The fit of the parts in places is horrible. You can make a good model from it, but just be prepared to spend lots of time and money to make it right.

Here is a link to the work in progress:

well my reply is simple only 1/12.
    many raisons:
1-they re scale and finitions models most beautifull models:
    tamiya kyosho AA..
2-the price stopped you to sell other scales 1/43/18.
3-easy to stock them in a display and don t touch them only for eyes.
4-if your are married she understand better, than 1/43/18 i ve better
    sounds from her
    5-don t be a child, be a collector.
6- earn money if you want to sell them later in original box also
it s more raisonable to buy 1/12 like a 1/43 BBR for the same price
you win in quality, in scale and your personal image.

this is my raisons that I choose 1/12.

Surprisingly the bigger the car the more it is difficult to make the parts fit. Even with Tamiyas (which IMHO is rated AAA+) my college flatmate had problems with the F14 fighter wing, the 1/12 Ferrari 312, etc.

Well, I have both the Fujimi 1/16 Testarossa and the Revell 1/12. It is true that both have their limitations...but I got a real $70.00 US Dollars shock this weekend with the Fujimi kit. Thought I would start it first because it had opening panels, etc...so -

Clipped the bodywork parts out of the trees to get ready for primer. Thought I would just test-fit the opening panels (doors, hatches, even the headlight covers) - and guess what?

The window surrounds on the doors miss the main body roofline by at least 3/16" because they are bent outward. The front edge of the doors are tight at the top front and miss the bottom front by a noticeable 1/16". Neither the front or rear compartment covers make anywhere near a decent fit.

No, it was not smashed or bent up in the box - the packaging was quite careful and it had plenty of heavy runners all over to prevent warping.

This looks like more scratch work than cutting open the panels on the Revell 1/12 (even if I have to buy two kits and cut both to minimize the gaps).

But at least they put a little electric motor in there so you can make the rear wheels spin to impress your kids.

Rant over - urge to spread lighter fluid on model fading...fading...
