    Suppose you needed a car that was going to be stone cold reliable for 3-4 years putting on ~40,000 miles per year.

    Regular oil changes and little else.

    Comfortable for highway travel a plus.

    Low mile Certified (i.e. 100,000 mile warranty) likely the method of acquisition.

    Price not a huge issue unless its crazy high.

    What would you get?

    Seriously -- a Chevy Surburban

    Chevy builds crap cars, but you can't knock their ability to build trucks. 120-160K miles is well within normal lifespans for these

    Testarossa.

    (Well that's what they told me in the Boxer/TR section...)

    Seriously, I'd probably go for an Acura. Dull, but Honda durability, Acura CPO program, and I've known sad-looking, neglected Hondas to hit 200,000 miles.

    If you get lucky, you'll find one with a cop motor, a 440-cubic-inch plant, cop tires, cop suspension, cop shocks.

    It's a model made before catalytic converters so it'll run good on regular gas.

    1989 traded for the 1995, 1995 traded for the 1999, 1999 sold for a Honda Pilot (less room needed with one kid off to college).

    Ends it all here, they are the best when it comes to running forever. Comfy, well built, and will get you anywhere you need to go.

    If it's just a highway cruiser, I'd say Acura TL/RL or Lexus ES/LS would be standouts. Suburbans offer more versatility, but lack the refinement of the Acura and Lexus vehicles.

    Definitely. I'd go with a Police Interceptor if I was going to be doing a lot of driving and didn't need luxury.

    Rock solid, simple design and people give you space on the freeway ;)

    Some thoughts

    Toyota Avalon
    Certified Q45 (these depreciate like crazy first few years)
    Lexus LS
    Lexus ES
    Bigger Acura (something L?)

    You could probably get any of the big Japanese luxo sedans certified used with a 100k warranty.

    +1 on the camry. We have an '03 Camry XLE with 115,000, and its been pretty neglected over the last 4 years, it wasn't until recently that we had a comprehensive service done.

    Get a used P71 Police Interceptor package

    Police options include:

    * 140 speedometer
    * HD cooling
    * Larger sway bar
    * HD alternator
    * Bushings
    * 4-wheel disc Brakes
    * HD driveshaft and U-joints
    * Engine oil cooler
    * Stainless dual Exhaust
    * Power steering cooler
    * HD Suspension
    * Trans Cooler
    * HD Wheels
    * Cooling Package
    * HD Body mounts
    * HD Tires
    * HD Roof Reinforcement
    * Deleted hood insulation
    * HD seats
    * Full size spare tire

    (HD = Heavy Duty)

    P71 Crown Vics are designed specifically for lots of hard miles. They're plenty quick, too. (First hand experience, don't ask). It may not be as sexy as a Volvo (never thought I'd say that) or a Lexus or Acura, but they've been refined for many many years to come to the current package, can get up to 25 mpg highway on 87 octane and any Joe Mechanic can fix it cheaply.

    I may have to go buy one myself.

    Lexus LS. For reliability and comfort it simply can't be beat. For years I was a road warrior territory manager and typically did 50 to 60 thousand miles a year. I only drove LSs and still have one for long trips. You just can't beat em.

    I second the Land Cruiser if you'll be trudging through heavy snow on a regular basis, but the gas can eat you alive. I used my LC one month and at 11mpg I rung $1200 in gas for the month. :)

    Seriously, if you have never driven an LS, get thee to a dealer and do so. Toyota reliability, comfort like you wouldn't believe.

    I went for an Audi A6 wagon, '06, already 25k miles. Reliable so far, plenty of storage space and great gas mileage.
