I can see some great games for PlayStation and for XBox, but I don't have either. I do however have a great computer with top specs, and a good wheel/pedals combo.

So my question is, what are the best racing and driving games available for PC?

I'm into flight sims as well, especially this one: http://www.lo-mac.com
Definitely the best military flight sim ever, IMHO.

GP4 is still the best driving game on any platform. Geoff Crammond (the author) is a genius. I remember playing his Revs on my sister's Electron the best part of 20 years ago and although the graphics are laughable by today's standards the actual driving element would still blow away most of the modern competition.

Does anyone know when GTR (Simbin) is going to be released in the US? Does anyone have it yet? The sample sounds, images and video look really great! I heard Atari is releasing it in Europe... who is distributing it in the US?

I have FIA-GTR. Bought it off German ebay. It is very good and very difficult. Not too many interesting tracks though.

That's a great site-thanx for posting. I used to play MS Flightsim and WWII Combat Flightsims. Ubisoft makes very high quality games; Pacific Fighters looks like something I would like.

    Agree.
That *simulator* is the best one around.
I've been playing it since GP1, tried full 2 hrs on the Monaco track. Now I can drive it blindfolded :) Awesome!

I enjoyed NFS:porsche. Long in the tooth now, but fun if you like vintage Porsches.

I think the console games are way ahead. I'm considering snagging a PS-2 to play GT-4.

I can't believe you drove full 2 hrs. The most I went was one hour and I know how tough it is to drive in GP. I love Monaco going up the hill and cruvy bend around the lake. I also love the high speed chicane at French GP track. But all and all, Hungary is the most fun with many hight speed tight turns...

Five years ago when I was really nut about these driving sim, I have bought about 50 driving sim. I had it all, need for speed, LeMans 24 Hr. FA F1, nascar,...And I played them. Many have problem with controlling. GP4 proof to be the only game closest to reality. The sad thing about it is GP5.... Is it coming out? no words at all.

It's a shame that these days. Kids games dominate the market so much that simulator is sort of things in the past. First, it happens to flight sim, USAF, the best flight sim ever went out of business. I don't know about these GP4 now....

Haven't played most of the games mentioned here yet but I think Need For Speed Underground 2 is fantastic. I guess most of the F-chatters will say it sucks because the game is all about ricers and stupid tuning, but the graphics are absolutely great and handling is actually very realistic. Way much better than the previous NFS series. If you like to drift around corners by using the gaspedal it's really fun to play. Just forget about the spinners and other ridiculous blingbling-stuff.

That pretty much speaks for itself.

    Of course you do.

    Yep.

Nope. This thread isn't about drifting, it's about serious driving sims. Do you by any chance know of the concept of a racing line?

Or perhaps we could go out and play the dozens of driving games better than this one. It certainly isn't a 'racing simulator' by any stretch of the imagination. More an arcade game poorly depicting hooning on public roads.

Oh please... the handling is beyond a joke. How can you qualify your statement about how realistic it is? Everything I've ever witnessed in these games suggests the exact opposite. What racing experience do you have to give your opinion any validity?

IL-2 Sturmovik is another terrific flight sim, preceding Pacific Fighters. If you're thinking about getting Lock On, you'll need a fairly updated computer or you'll be disappointed in the sim's performance. It's a very complex sim and eats up CPU and RAM. On a fast pc there's nothing else like it out there. You can fly the sheeyit outta that sim without firing the first shot and still have a blast. Beautiful scenery/graphics.

Hey Admiral, I hate to say it but you really pi$$ me off with that attitude of yours. First of all, this thread is not just about racing sims as you stated. If you can read, you'll see the guy asked suggestions on good racing and driving games. So I gave him my opinion. I said I couldn't compare with most of the other games mentioned here, I could only compare to other NFS series. And I think more people will agree with me the handling is way much better than the Hot Pursuit series. No of course it is not realistic, indeed, far away from that. Think relatively. But I think they did a great job. Obviously, you don't. So be it. Let me play and have some fun. I played Grand Prix 4 (guess that got your approval since you haven't said anything about that), but it has it's negative points as well. But I take it for granted. Is there any perfect game?
Of course I know what a racing line is. C'mon, you think you're a genius or what? Do you need to have racing experience to play a racing game? Is your mother proud of you that you do have it?
Let everybody give his opinion, and stop being such a smarta$$.

Oldie but a goodie. Lots of support/downloads on line. Especially good if you are into vintage racing (as I am). Running a 512M at Riverside is an awful lot of fun!

I used to like the Need for Speed series. I hate Porsches, but I have to admit it was a cool idea (should have done a Ferrari version). The Hot Pursuit versions were cool also. Unfortunately, I can't stand the Underground versions. Why would I want to pretend I'm street trash in a junky asian tuner car? If I wanted to burn rice, I'd try my hand at cooking again.

Back in Canada (I have to have it shipped over), I had the Logitec Force Feedback GP wheel and pedal set. It came with a game from EA called Sports Car GT, and you know what, it was a half-decent game.

Thanks everyone for your feedback and input!

Sorry Dan, I disagree: There is only one console game coming even close to reality and that'd be the F 355 Challenge sim with three monitors. Aside from that, the best sims are written for the PC.

Need to be convinced? Come to my house and we'll race.
    :)

So Lock On is a stand-alone sim? I didn't check out the webpage close enough--I immediately got interested in Pacific Fighters because I like WWII sims and have played other Ubisoft games and know they do good material. I will look again. I do have the hardware now-new Dell XPS desktop system, too many goodies to list. It runs games like you wouldn't believe. Thanks again.

Lock On more or less is a beefed up Flanker 2.0 (Su27). If you'd like to experience the thrill of flying a Su27/Su33/Mig29/Su25/F15/A10, this is about as close as it gets on a PC. It is simply a fantastic simulation, and has multiplayer mode as well. Plenty of virtual squadrons if you're interested. I don't do too much on-line flying because getting shot down the second you get airborne gets old real quick... Still, it can be a real blast. You can get both Lock On and Pacific Fighters in one package, if I'm not mistaken. You won't be disappointed with either, I'm sure.
