It's a car, not a mutual fund. Drive it and be happy.

Apart from delivering a very pure driving experience (there was no GT3 RS back then), I heard that it was built at one of Porsche's motorsport centers - whereas the new ones are all assembled along with all other standard 911s. It (the Mk1 GT3) was also produced in very few numbers compared to rest of the GT3s (the Mk2/facelift 996 GT3 was also sold in USA, bumping up production numbers).

I can't go in to technical details because I suck at it, but its engine is also known for a) its replacement price (ca. 40.000 GBP for the Mk2 GT3 engine, as mentioned by Top Gear in their review) and b) it's got a proper race car derived engine - Wiki has more on the subject:

    How cool is that :)

I haven't driven one, but I have never heard a bad thing a bout one except the obvious ride quality for daily driving. It won the evo magazines Car of the year award too. If I had a car collection, it wouldn't be complete without one.

I think the top-spec GT2 will always be somewhat desirable. 996 GT2s (and GT3s for that matter) are at the bottom of the depreciation curve, I think they'll go up in the next few years. shouldn't have sold my 6-GT3 :(

agree on the 964 3.6 as well.

    tru dat! :D

    That is true.

However, some fully depreciated cars have potential, to at least offset the cost of mechanical upkeep - or better. With some other previously owned vehicles, it is known to be a deep money pit.

A car that can't be given away? Either you own one or don't know the market.

When someone's "giving away" a distinctive Porsche with 356 produced for the world, that's an opportunity. Buy it cheap, lightly used, and hang onto it.

    Here's an investment grade 1989 'Speedster' at $150K: http://sloancars.com/2889/1989-911-speedster-guards-redblack-680-miles-2/

That is a nice Speedster. However, it is a nice investment for Sloan, not the buyer.

As for the 997 Speedster, I thought they were really cool looking, but for $200k+, I'd be buying a Ferrari.

Sloan really loves his cars. He's always top dollar but also low mileage cars to boot.

356 cabs will do well speedsters also creeping up as they usually are 2x a cab
89 speedsters while the 94 is the better car man are they tough to find good low mileage
993 TT S models have done well and will continue
930 turbo's were sure produced by the buttload. Id say do your research for a good one
    Cgt
993 speedster if you can find one
993 RS lightweights. Good luck finding one :)
993 gt2 non street legal here but man what a car.
964 turbo s flat nose. Wow just what a looker. So rare and so beautiful.
964 RS America's will hold value but I don't think they will go up.
964 RS euro would be a catch if you can get one here. They will Def creep up.

73 RS have gone to stupid money just this year. Doubled and some have tripped. Possibly a missed boat on the best 911 IMHO. I wish I had one of those for sure.

You know, I never really understood the RSA, but Porsche is brilliant! Get a car, strip it down and charge more for it. I mean, the RSAs are running $35k+, but you can get a 964 for @$15K, gut it and it is almost the same thing.

sloan get's a bad rap why? he finds great cars and he knows it...prices them to where he knows dicriminating buyers will reasonably negotiate from. my ex co-worker bought a factory turbo look cab and paid richard's asking price...which seemed a bargain after looking at half a dozen far inferior examples. stop low balling our cars guys....please.

you talk about the ones that got away...my family has a long and distingguished history in that. my father owned the last TR (250 tr) ever constructed. gave away a 250 mm...the list goes on. have a look at my profile and look at two noteworthy p cars that slipped through my hands. it is clear I have the family curse.

h2o, I apologize as my comment was really a generalization regarding RS and his valuations. I should have been more clear in that and meant in no way to connect you to my comment. you simply made an observation of RS's apparent love of porsches :)

on many web sites, the discussion is always how he is out of his mind and his pricing is absurd. my point is that he clearly understands the value of his cars and that he has no interest in devaluing great cars or confusing them with lesser examples. that's all.

    best,

He's a little presumptive too apparently. If you've got a rare car and call him asking what it's worth etc. he'll ask for pics and next thing it's on his website for sale. This happened to a guy on the 911S registry. He had to tell him to pull it off once he got wind of it.

I think a lot of internet sellers will grab cars from all over. Put it up and try to strike a deal.

Ive noticed for the last 2 years with his new website that all the cars listed are photo'd in the same spot so hes either a great photo chopper or has most the cars now :)

His stuff is good. I find myself combing his page a couple times a month and I need another car like I need a hole in my head.

Wow, that's nice! I remember back in his prime, Michael Jordan had that exact car in black with custom mods, as in no back seats to accommodate his long legs :D

    +1 I see up-side to these as well. :)

Also...a garden variety 996 can be bought right. The only problem is that you'll be driving a garden variety 996! :(
