Looking to get my first "nice" pen, but have no idea what brand to go with, etc. Any recomendations on a good pen (either rollerball or ballpoint)? I have found a couple Waterman's that I like, as well as a Mont Blanc. Is one better than the other? Thanks!

I have the Mont Blanc Noblesse, which I love. However, I would prefer a pen that is "clickable" or twistable if you know what I mean, instead of having a cap so I can use it with one hand.

The trouble with many Mont Blanc is that they are made of plastic, and generally unimaginative in design. I think Waterman makes good pens, along with Pelican, among others. If you can, try out the feel of any quality pen to see if it suits you.

have you checked out www.fountainpenhospital.com ?

Last night I saw a carbon fiber Ferrari pen. It was real nice! Not sure about the price since it was someones door prize, but it came from the dealership so I'm sure you could find one there.

My suggestion is to get a $15-30 fountain pen set and learn how to use one, THEN get yourself a really nice fountain pen for writing cards and such. A well written note in fountain ink looks really special. I don't know the good or bad about particular brands though, to be honest.

My penmenship is only moderately bad but I am jealous and wish I devoted more time to do calligraphy... every few years I buy some calligraphy pens and give it another shot but I don't practice enough.

Thanks for all the help, especially LetsJet. I appreciate the link to the ebay seller, I'd looked on ebay, but I wasn't sure who was legit or not.

I don't like most of them...too heavy for the most part. They definately are *cool* though.

Fountain pens aren't even as good as a nice gel pen either...(yes I know how to use them, I used a fountain almost exclusively for nearly 2 years)

i've kind of gotten into pens lately. I like larger diameter, heavy pens. I'll post the names and some pics later today. Its def looks professional to have a nice leather porfolio and a fine pen in business mtgs.

i've become a huge fan of these:
    http://www.namiki.com/collections/pilotVanishingPoint_RA.php

the only pens i have that i prefer are the old-school Rotring 600s - but from before Sanford bought Rotring. post-acquisition they dumbed the pen down quite a bit and it's nowhere as good. five or so years ago i bought up a variety of NOS pre-acquisition fountain pens from europe via eBay - i hope they last forever!

the pilot/namiki stuff is great. highly recommended.

    I agree about the Rotrings.

My current favorite daily use pen (a ballpoint) is a Porsche Design pen. I have the fountain pen as well, and it is my favorite pen in that category also. They are made of a stainless steel weave that looks like braided brake line--perfect if you are really into cars. They are also very tough/durable.

You can see them here, though I'm sure better prices are available.

Oh dear...i've just fallen in love with that Mont Blanc. Does anyone know the retail price on it? I know the "ebay" price but what do they retail for from Mont Blanc?
