I saw a lot of Montana plates at the New Canaan Caffeine and Carburetors events and at the Greenwich Concours. I had no idea there were so many cowboys around there! ;)

How does one register in Montana? Do you need a property there?

lol I feel your pain. $6900.00 in sales tax here in MA on a used car. Could have put a deposit on a cheap house in NH, reg it there and pay nothing.

The issue here is yearly property tax, not the one time sales tax, which is high like MA.

Don't you need to tell your insurer where the car is garaged? I'm about to register a somewhat pricy car and want to consider VT or NH reg if it can save thousands.

Keep in mind, if you get caught, it's a misdemeanor, which can be problematic if you are a licensed professional in your home state.

And how would you deal with the yearly high excise/property tax on vehicles in NH?

If the vehicle is at lest 20 years old you can get a classic plate. The car will be assessed a value of $500. I pay $16 a year for my Ferrari.

NH charges town/state fees, not tax.

Based on year/value/weight, the older it gets the less until it hits a minimum

Again, it's considered a fee though, not a tax

All considering, registering a car in NH is great if it cost $250K and you don't have to pay that sales tax...

Connecticut is tough with the annual car tax assessed by the towns and cities. The tax is assessed by the municipality that the car is registered in as of October 1 of any year. The mill rates vary greatly from one to another and some are just horrible. Greenwich and Darien are the only ones that are at least somewhat tolerable. You can't register a car in a town unless you live or own property in a town. If the car is 20 years old or older just get a Connecticut classic plate and it will solve all your car tax issues.

    What state are you quoting???

Here is the NH rundown. Buy a ski condo at Crotched Mountain, 60 miles from downtown Boston. Have seen some in foreclosure, under $20k. Condo fee $1k/year, prop tax maybe $2k. Antique plates are $6 a year. (new plates add $8 fee)

For example, an early 80s Mondial is valued at mid 50k MSRP, annual town tax is $164

So a 2011 or older exotic would be taxed. Idk new exotics, I skip depreciation.
    100k car= $300 a year
    150k car= $450
    200k car= $600

Insurance can be turned off with ease, I do so in winter for all but truck. Hagerty policy is about $100 a year per 50k value or so.
