About 2 years ago I retired and I'm getting sick of NY traffic, winters and taxes. I was wondering if any of you guys (and gals) have any thoughts on moving. Where would you go? Warm, safe, etc.

Sarasota, Florida. The gulf coast is amazing. Warm beach breezes, beautiful scenery and moderate costs depending on how close you want to be to the gulf.

My favourite places? There are so many beautiful places in the world ... I'd get a mobilhome from these guys : www.actionmobil.at or www.unicat.net and wake up to whatever scenery I want! I would have to do the Carrera Panamericana route. Would love to see a lot of southern america. Then have the truck shipped to the old continent and visit the whole thing.

Now if you want to stick to a home ... I was very impressed by Utah. It is such a splendid state, so many different sceneries so close. I loved it.
Other than that, Switzerland ranks right up there. I love mountains, and well ... it hardly gets any better than switzerland. A couple hours drive and you're on the Cote D'Azur (Nice/Cannes/Monaco) ... more beautiful and more exotic than So. Cal., or a couple hours east, and you end up in Italy, Como Lake, Dolomiti, drive a bit more, hit Venice. Up north, you have Germany, which a terrific country for castles, beer, sausage and the Nordschleife track. I would love to visit places from the ex-USSR too, just out of curiosity.
If you really want sunshine and sea, why not Dubai and their brand spanking new artificial islands? Heck, Beckham's got a house there, as well as Brad Pitt and other celebrities. Must be a nice and safe place.

The People's Republic of Hawaii. As long as you can tolerate the highest taxes in the USA, the weakest public schools, and political corruption on an oriental scale. But hey, the weather's great and the livin's easy. I recommend one of the "outer islands."

Go to Egypt. Get a mansion somewhere on a lagoon/red sea for 1/2 a mil or something complete with maid's quarters. Spend the equivalent of 3 bucks a day for your own driver, 100 bucks a month (maybe less, not sure) for a full time maid, same with a cook, etc.

Beautiful weather, great history, great snorkeling/scuba diving access, great golf (if you are in the right places, there are 2-3 nice courses but more are being built).

Another vote for Sarasota here. Great little town with good access to larger cities. I especially like the Siesta Key area.

DrStranglove is also right about NC. Beautiful state with lots of nice towns to choose from.

My suggestion would be to find 2-3 nice places with different flavors and buy a little place in each one. I know I plan on 3 different places for retirement. You don't grow tired of living somwhere and you can get a variety of seasons and climates.

These mountains are aweful. Don't even come to look at them! Florida is much nicer, nice level straight roads that are easy to drive on!

If you like snow, but not a lot try western Mayland. Now if you are REALLY thinking ahead to when you won't be able to drive look at some of the small town in western PA. Some a very nice and you don't need car. pretty much every county has at least one nice town like this.

There was one incident with tourists in Luxor about 5 -8 years ago or something like that but other than that it is pretty safe.

    Congrats on retiring -

Have you given this any thought on your own? It would be easier if you had a few places in mind.

I think I'm headed back to Hawaii myself, but I was born there.

Anyplace with beach sand or snow cover, so I can avoid being miserable with sinus/allergy problems this time of year. Have to wait four more years though...

I agree that Utah is a beautiful place and I grew up in Colorado. St. George is a hot retirement (figuratively and actually) city. HOWEVER, southern Utah and Nevada are going to be in serious water shortage problems within 10 years. Lake Mead and Lake Powell are filling with silt. Lake Powell is down 30 m in elevation this year due to low snowpack and it will take some time to catch up.

Photos around St. George and north.

As per your next post Egypt is beyond safe, but you could make me the wealthiest man in Egypt, and I wouldn't live there.
After two weeks I was actually happy to land in New York!!!
    Big Sur, thats the ticket.

LMAO :) Sorry Doc, but the secret has been out for a long time about your state. I read somewhere that so many Floridians are moving(transplanting themselves?) to NC that the local realtors have dubbed them, "coconuts".
