    Hi all,
Hoping for some local experience - looking for the best radar option for NY (Manhattan and Long Island). Ideally something a little discrete looking

Any help would be much appreciated!!

I haven't utilized a detector for a while but in the USA the biggest state to worry about is Virginia because they work the hardest at detecting their usage by motorists.
Last time for me was a Valentine Gen 1 and that they detected. My wife was driving and the officer didn't confiscate the unit and issued just a warning.

If you're planning on obscenely violating the speed limit in Manhattan and Long Island I suggest a change in venue ... too damn dangerous. If you're trying to avoid the 50 MPH in a 35-40 zone, nothing is infallible to instant on. It's not fun to drive here ... sorry.

    Thanks Bob.

I totally get the importance of keeping to the speed limit, and as much as this is the default, radars do have a place, assuming the right one is chosen.

I guess I want a belt and braces approach, there are a LOT of ‘traps’ in LI. I understand detectors are perfectly legal as long as they are not attached to the windshield?

Will look at the Valentine V1, thank you.

I have an Escort 360 installed in a 911 that is excellent it has sensor back and front and laser jammers and only goes off when cops are present. It has completely hidden controls are in the ashtray and read out in a custom mirror. I also have another one, a stand alone, Escort Max 360 but the installed one is much more accurate. Installed ones are very expensive in NYC. They quoted 8k so for my 296 so I got a standalone Uniden R7 it is good but a little too sensitive and goes off frequently without any visible police. I have not played with the settings yet. In sum, get a built in one, the new Escort version is called a Redline ci. I had my installed by Porsche Manhattan installer.

Detectors won’t help you in NYC as it’s all done with cameras. I would suggest having WAZE on 24-7.

I dodged a bullet a week ago Monday in Pennsylvania coming home from the Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix. I was on I80 headed to NYC and there was someone pretty damn slow in the left lane with mostly a string of trucks in the right lane. I was behind this person for about 10 minutes and finally an opening came and I scooted around on the right. My car reached 100 pretty soon after passing him and I needed to get back in the left lane to avoid an up coming truck. So I did that and then as I pulled quite ways ahead I noticed he was still holding the left lane and more specifically a state police car who was glued to his rear end!

So ... I had just passed on the right and came close to going 100MPH right in front of a state trooper! I got back in the right lane and toned it down a bit and the trooper came flying by me in the left lane and for whatever reason just kept going.

If I had Waze on my wife might have seen it but she was on the phone at the time so who knows. Radar would have been useless.

Your eyes and your brain are best first line of defense but on that day I was inattentive, enjoying my new to me car with 545hp. I dodged a bullet.

Thank you all - it’s really appreciated.

I think @Wiseone that is great advice, a built in unit is probably the way to go. Need to cover a 718 Cayman, G Wagon and Roma, ironically the G Wagon is the one which a windshield mounted one is worst - the screen is too short!

@ttforcefed thank you, I will contact AI design also

I do run a valentine one.
But NY with its speed cameras, Decibel meters, and motorists with cell phones and entitled bikers, pedestrians & such:
    Fuhgeddaboudit
    and reverberating through tunnels? dont.
    dont speed.

Waze will get you around (hopefully) many of the permanent traffic jams
and will let you know about speed cams and cops.
That's the best you can do.
