Wat would you guys consider to be the best restaurant city in the world?
I really like the restaurants in Chicago, but then again, I'm biased. New York is also famous for restaurants. The Top 20 from Bloomberg just recently got released: http://www.luxist.com/2006/04/10/el-bulli-named-the-worlds-best-restaurant/
No doubt in my mind I can answer that New Orleans is the vest resturant city in the USA. Having traveled all over the world, there I would rather dine at resturants down there then many other places if we are purely talking about food.
My vote would go for New Orleans for US cities. Bangkok for world cities - I love Thai food, and you can get a great meal there for under $5. It is ridiculous.
My pick would be Guangzhou, its known as the food capital of China and where dining out is the main passtime. You can't walk 100 yards without passing a restaurant. Any style of Chinese or international with well over 10,000 middle to high class restaurants. Price is good, quality is great, plenty of overseas chefs too. I really miss that place. Also my home city of Wellington NZ is pretty good, it has more cafes/restaruants per head than New York City, but too damn expensive. Cheers, Neil
I think for pure variety, London and New York cant be beat. Houston wont feature on the list for sure
agreed, as much as i hate to admit it, many restaurants are paying big $$$ to recruit the worlds top chefs and relocate them to vegas.
now for REAL cuisine! try any of these cities(country in CAPS) and i guarantee you won't be disappointed! 1)paris,FRANCE(stray from cafe's!) 2)bali,INDONESIA(superb italian, fantastic french, awesome seafood and gorgeous indonesian food on this fantastic island!) 3)new delhi,INDIA(restaurants here will definitely give you REBORN tastebuds) 4)london,U.K(a bit of everything!) 5)los angelas,U.S(more on style but still fab!) 6)madrid,SPAIN(excellent med. food) 7)barcelona,SPAIN(andalucian fare sure to impress) 8)milan,ITALIA(unbelievable) 9)monaco,MONACO(royal dlights!) 10)new york,U.S(hard to beat)
Beyond the obvious standouts like Paris and New York, the small town (pop 2870) of Yountville, CA (in the Napa Valley) is quite extraordinary in its selection. It's the home of French Laundry, Bistro Jeanty, Domain Chandon, and several other notables. Gary
I live in South Florida, and Miami has some wonderful places. Whenever I go to Boston I can't seem to find a bad meal. Then again, I enjoy lobster. New York or Vegas is probably tops.
Monaco? They have a world-class restaurant, but does it have the depth and quality all over to be consider a haven? Is New Orleans the same as pre-Hurricane Katrina? Sydney, Australia seems to ge a lot of support. Has London and Las Vegas transformed themselves finally?
Paul, what exactly do you mean? Most of the classics are back and as good as ever, some even better! Even Galatoire's is back. A lot of the dives are back. Pascal's Manale is serving delicious oysters. The Marigny is doing very well. Staffing problems still exist, but not nearly to the extent that was present 3 months ago. In fact, I have really enjoyed some of the new restaurants that have appeared POST Katrina! Obviously the Brennans are struggling, but my source on the inside has related to me that they are very optimistic. For those who are down on the N.O. food scene, here is a list of the restaurants that are open(updated daily): http://www.nomenu.com/RestaurantsOpen.html A great side product of the plethora of restaurants in this city is the fact that everyone demands and expects food to be of the highest quality, which means you can get away on the cheap for some great food at many places all over the city. New Orleans. Down, but clearly far from out.
John- appreciate your bright outlook but to say things are back to the way it used to be is not realistic.
