My wife and I are planning a trip to Provence in early October. Any suggestions for the finest hotels and restaurants would be welcome!

    Thanks!

Email from a friend - French National, same question...we went in later May earlier this years. I followed his recommendations and was not disappointed.

The place you have to visit for sure are :

Aix en Provence : this is a very nice city with pedestrian area. If you like opera, please be aware in July you have to attend the WW opera festival (www.festival-aix.fr).
The hotel I would recommend is Le Roy Rene right in the middle of the city meaning you are close to everything.( http://www.mgallery.com/fr/hotel-1169-grand-hotel-roi-rene-aix-en-provence-mgallery-collection/index.shtml )
Restaurant : Very modern cuisine but you have to try it. Even the cheapest menu is unique with the wine pairing glass selection. (http://www.restaurant-pierre-reboul.com/). Please book ahead.
Nearby Aix you can do so many things around. I suggest you rent a car and travel for daily excursions.

Marseille : This is unique. This is Marseille. You have to spend time there because of the location (le Vieux Port, La Corniche, Notre dame de la garde) and the island (If Castle etc)... You have to plan a daily tour in les Calanques (Cassis) : cristal clear water surrounded by Cliffs. If you can afford a private chartered boat enables you to swim enjoy at your own pace.
Hotel : only one place to stay Le Sofitel Vieux Port (http://www.sofitel.com/fr/hotel-0542-sofitel-marseille-vieux-port/index.shtml) for the breakfast view and the bar view. You will like it. I do not know anyone disliking it. If not try the Pullmann Palm beach a little bit remote (http://www.accorhotels.com/fr/hotel-3485-pullman-marseille-palm-beach/index.shtml).

For the restaurant I would think that if you enjoyed seafood you have to go Le Petit Nice (also an hotel) - (http://www.passedat.fr/) - This is a 3 star michelin restaurant and the way they cook fish is fantastic. This is a one time life experience with the set menu. The scenery is unique. If you can go go ! Other option could be Le Peron for a nice time on the terrasse (http://www.restaurant-peron.com/).

Les Baux de Provence : Very nice little village that should make you discover the Provence. Try the hotel Baumanieres or Le Cabri d'Or. From their you can visit Arles (Roman city) and La Camargue (Rhone river delta - unique landscape).
