Best source for rebushing 3 pot webers?

    Several of our 512bb carbs have wobbly throttle shafts - enough that you can hear them tick and watch them move while running. I disassembled one carb and found the teflon busing strips were in surprisingly good shape, so I'm afraid new bushings alone won't cure the problem.

    I haven't been following boxer threads for a while...where's the best place to send carbs these days? (Either complete rebuild and recolor, or just someone who can rebush the bodies)

    Good day,

    Pierce Manifolds rebuilds/restores them. Last time I checked (Fall 2016) it was approximately $1500 per carb with a 10-12 week delivery (price and delivery varies based upon the carb's condition). Lastly they only do full rebuilds.

    How much would be a new/refurbished carb Sam ? Are they still for sale ?

    Agreed but there's only two factory test stands on the planet for these carbs so they can and monitor them before and after a build. Mike has one and the other is in England.

    My mechanic rebuilt them a few years ago. Ferrari guy who now has his own shop. Did a terrific job.

    Located in suburban philly, and would certainly not take 10 weeks.

    Good day Mel,

    Indeed, a bit of $$$ ... However, this price is for a full rebuild + a full restoration and so they will look and work like new. Pierce does not do light rebuilds, as there are simply too many items that may need addressing. I found the owner (Mike Pierce) to be very helpful and very accommodating with his time. For example he spent about 45 minutes on the phone with me explaining some of the technical elements/details of the IDA carbs in order to help me deal with a rich mixture issue.

    As for a new one... I was told (by a few Industry people) a number of years ago that Weber's original molds for the carbs and some components were damaged... and so they could not easily make new ones. I suspect they decided not to remake new molds, as the market is simply too small and has moved away from carbs. That being said PMO (PMO High Performance Porsche 911 Carburetors & EFI & MFI Fuel Injection Kits) makes a version of the IDA carbs (for the Porsche 911 market, as the 911's used the same IDA carbs), however, I am unsure how they compare (look, etc) to the original Webers. Price wise the PMO IDA Version appear to be about $3800 USD for a pair.

    Ive debated shelving mine and going with the PMO's. They don't look correct but for a car intended to be used and thoroughly enjoyed rather than parked on a lawn I think its something to consider.

    I think if the teflon bushing strips are in good shape but the shaft still leaks you probably have worn throttle bodies or throttle shafts, or both. People often try to remedy leaky shafts with new teflon strips which won't cure the problem for long, if at all. The proper solution would be to ream and rebush the bodies and install new shafts if they are out of spec. Maybe you can find a Porsche guy experienced in IDA's who'd take a shot at it, but for the probably relatively small savings I'd just cowboy up and send them to Pierce.

    My idea too Paul.

    Better drive well and shelve the oem carbs (if the car is ever sold well :D) !

    Driving with leaking carbs is stupid imo ... but you see and hear them often ... Mostly a money problem ...

    Thanks for all the replies. I know of Pierce but never inquired about service.

    Am on the fence about completely restoring the carbs...The car is largely untouched except for a fair 90's repaint. Its a nice weekend driver but still has original finishes under the hood, original suspension, older tires, etc. Great candidate for a full restoration, but any new work we do will really stand out in the meantime. Better it runs well than not at all though.

    There is a guy in NY, Joe Curto, he was/is the king of british carbs for decades. It might be worth a call to him to hear if he knows someone or if he will do them. He is a carb genius.

    Paul is a great guy. He does beautiful work. He solved one of those really frustrating problems. We spent some time on the phone but the prob still eluded me so I gave up and sent it to him. He kept me informed what he was checking, and he got it! This was on a twin choke DCNF, and he told me he prefers the triples, but he was intrigued by the challenge so stepped up to help me. He was very reasonable too. I was so glad to put it back on the motor and have it respond and tune nicely.
