I am putting a Capristo exhaust with NAperformance exhaust headers on my newly purchased 1997 355 spider. I would like to install test pipes (yes, I know it triggers the check engine light). What are the best test pipes for this car, or are they all pretty much the same?
    thanks

do test pipes work correctly with 5.2? I heard they would cause one of the cylinders to shut down...

I don't know where you heard about 1 cylinder cutting out.... that's really weird.

Yeah, I know some people frown upon "test pipes", however, they won't cause a problem except for CEL indicator. This comes from the secondary O2 sensor not detecting a change. A similator can solve that problem for under $100.

My friend's F355B has a Tubi and test pipes, and I must say the sound is both awesome and addicting at the same time. I think he got his pipes from Tubi, so you might try that route. I am willing to bet that the new NA headers will only augment the engine note.

Do you mean augment for the better or for worse? Where do I buy a similator for the test pipes?
    thanks gordon

That is funny! LOL! I am wiring the money for the car tomorrow morning and the car is already in Columbus getting worked on. It will be in the shop for 2-3 weeks getting new headers, capristo, challenge grill, possibly test pipes, new tires with spacers, leather dyed, interior plastic parts cleaned up, new windshield, and some other cosmetic items.

Once this whole ordeal is done, I am thinking about selling the script of this story to the networks for a future "sunday night movie"!
But I promise, once I get the car back, I will post pictures with the full story!
    Stay tuned!

    Gordon,

There's quite a few out there, I'd go with the Capristo if they're still available just to have the matching combo. I can get them for you if you're having trouble finding them.

    Regards,
    Kevin

Great luck with the new car. I think you mentioned that you paid $70K for it. I was just curious as to what type of issues, if any, the car has, ie, dings, dents, scratches, missing car/seat/steering wheel covers, tools, manuals, scratched/dented interior door sills, worn interior, bubbling console, higher mileage, bronze valve guides which have not been updated, etc, etc.
Here locally in NY, a perfect to near perfect late model F355 Spider( 98-99 MY ) still sells for the $92-105K range. And, I have seen very, very few near perfect examples offered for sale. One can't even find a 1995 348 Spider in perfect low mileage condition for $70K.
Again just curious and best of luck with the "new" car.

I actually paid $69,500 for it! It needs the following: new windshield ($3,000 dealer will claim this on his insurance, paint is in great shape, needs top motor worked on, seats redyed, sticky center console needs cleaned up, leather dash just got recovered, valve guides are ok according to dealer, ppi was fine, 12,000 documented carfax miles, I am putting on new tires - Kumho 295 in back and 235 in front with spacers, needs new exhaust manifolds ($3200 biggest expense on whole project), new capristo with test pipes, did not come with all the tools, no car cover and no seat cover, just recently had 30k mile service done at MAG in Ohio. All in all I am putting $15k (incl all upgrades) into this car but it should be pretty much like new. So for $85k I will have a top notch car with all the items I want on it. Compared to what some of the overpiced dealers charge for these cars (red/tan 6 speed, 97 modes) with prices sometimes exceeding $100k, I think I got a pretty damn good deal.
I will post pics and full story when I have it in my hands!

The obsession with near perfect cars astound me.

I take mine everywhere I can, with some reasonable care to places I park.

P.S> You may want to put on a clear film shield. That really does help with the stone chips!! best investment on the car.

    spidey,
I do plan on having the 3m film applied to the front. Trust me, the car is not near perfect and will probably never be perfect! I am not trying to make it perfect. I just want to have it come out to my liking. Yes I will drive the car hard and often, and it will definitely not be a garage queen.
