Equipping an aluminum-framed C6Z06 with a proper cage seems completely impractical. From a technical standpoint, better to start with a steel-framed C6 coupe.

What I was answering was one of the comments earlier recommending a C6Z, and making the comment that the C5 Z is a better starting place than a C6Z. From that standpoint the C5 Z is a better starting point than a C6 Coupe, since the C6 is heavier and not as much fun to drive. The goodly number of ex T1 cars available that are fully prepped and can be had for a reasonable price was the point. A T1 C5Z is going to likey have the complete T1 suspension package, which includes stiffer springs, bigger bars and differnt control arms with stiffer bushings, all of which make the car a lot more crisp on the track.

Bottom line is that a nice T1 prepped C5Z is a great track day car for a very reasonable price.

My track car is a 1993 Mazda RX-7 with a 1999 LS1 motor and T56 from a F-Body. The reason that I like it is because I can get a new roller shell for under $15K if I break the entire car and just swap the motor to it. There is a massive aftermarket/factory support (Mazda motorsports) for it. The LS1 motor is reliable and parts are cheap. It puts down nearly 400whp and a bit more in torque and only weights 2700lbs. I can run cheap wheels (that I dont mind destroying) with fairly wide tires (275s on all corners). It is typically one of the fastest cars at the track when I go.

Cheap, reliable, fast. Basically it is like driving a Z06 that has gone on a massive diet except the body is cheaper to replace.

I have thought about tracking the Ferrari or the Jaguar E-Type and havent had the guts to do it.

    Lotus Elise,
Campagna T-Rex, if you want to experience something very close to an open wheel race car. You can put a Hayabusa engine or a turbo or both!

I always wanted to buy a fairly used 355 Berlinetta, strip it down, upgrade it and make a track car, but still road legal considering the fact that they never made a track/road 355.

What do you think about this, can it be done and if so would it be good?

    A Mazda Miata...

Endless mods, light, cheap to fix, add boost for real fast, etc. Plus there is nothing more rewarding then passing half the cars listed in here in a little Miata LOL.

But why? Just to have a Ferrari track car? Won't even be close to the fastest thing you can get for the money.

Don't get me wrong I LOVE the 355 Challenge cars, one of my favorite Ferrari's. I don't understand your first part though, how well you go fast? Fast is fast right? lol.

If we are talking about REAL cars, i.e. cars you could take on a road trip in comfort----bang for the buck, C5 Z06. It's very limited on sex appeal to me, but it's a track warrior! If you decide you need more speed, do a heads/cam setup and you can run with all but the fastest in a straight line and the real battlefield----the corners---is up to you. C5s do tend to crack rotors often, but considering how cheap they are, it's no big deal.

There is much more romance and sex appeal to racing a beautiful Ferrari, but this is truly for those with excess amounts of disposable income! Anytime you track your street car purely for fun, you are losing money hand over first because doing so doesn't make money, it only costs money! And the extremely high resale value of Ferraris relative to other top shelf cars fades with high mileage/track mileage unless the car has some special racing history. The resale hit alone is more expensive than parts. That said, if I were in the position to do so, I would want to track a Ferrari. Tracking for no pay is something you do purely for the love of it, and life is short, no? The 355 can certainly be quick and recent Challenge and Strad cars are much quicker! But you have to make sure you can take the $$$ hit, because tracking is addictive!

I started the thread, got lots of great feedback, thought about it a lot and....my Caterham Superlight R500 is about halfway done (I will post pics when it is complete). I can't freakin' wait.

In the meantime, I had my '06 Evo MR tweaked by CBRD Speedfactory in York, PA (CBRD custom intercooler, Cobb turbo-back exhaust, Perrin intake, ECU flash, bigger fuel pump, Ohlins coil-overs, stainless steel brake lines, Ferodo DS2500 pads, powerslot front rotors, Whiteline antiroll kit, OZ Ultraleggera 18's with 245/40 BF Goodrich g-Force R1's) and damn, if it ain't fast. Talk about bang for the buck. I was staying with some pretty expensive machinery for less than $60k with four-doors, 4 cupholders and all.

    Amen.

Amen... but things do wear out if you are going for tweak parts that last a race or three.

How many grams can we shave off that part until it ALMOST breaks during a race.

I am very close to get Ariel Atom 3, the 300HP supercharged version of course :) Street legal, formula like and plenty of fun. I will check the car on track day this Thursday and if i will like it, i will go for it. Will post some pictures from Thursday.

Beside i am seriously thinking to change my Murcie for 997 GT3RS to use it for track on bigger circles or when weather does not allow to take Atom. I am very dissapointed by the way how Murcie drives. What amazing looking car and what ****ing poor driving........ I think Atom 3 + GT3RS would make awesome track combo.

Good luck, Petr! It's one of the cars I'm craving for too...

    PS: I think it's not the Murcies that's bad, I think it's the GT3RS that's spoiled you :D

I saw Ariel few times on some track events, now i will have chance to be in the car.Not sure if the guy will let me drive, but at least as passenger :) I practically decided to get one, just have to chose the right options. There is lot of possible extras, hopefully i will get clear picture next week what is worth of the additional money. Some options from price list sound strange, dont even know what it is.

For Murcie i think its exact opposite of ideal track car, i found driving Murcie as ****ing young supermodel who just lay on bad without move. So beautiful but just no fun. I realy love GT3RS, only problem for me is spend so much money for Porsche :) 997GT3RS is still lof of money. Thats my only dilema now :)
