I have a fairly good sized coin collection that im looking to sell. Am I better off doing eBay, going to a coin shop or what? also is it better to sell the collection in whole or sell each item alone.

    thanks

Don't mean to be nosy, but if it's worth a LOT you should sell it here:

    http://www.ha.com/

These people are like the Sothebys of coins.

If it's not worth over say $10,000 or so, you could find a local coin show and sell it there. Also craigslist is good, and there are some forums too:

    http://www.treasurenet.com/bid/

Also, wouldn't hurt to list some of them here:

    http://www.arizonagoldprospectors.com/invision/index.php?showforum=3

And, of course, there are some collectors on this site too, myself included though I'm not buying coins right now :)

Sometimes you can find someone to take the entire collection for a fair price, but most of the time you'll have to piece it out. People might buy a few at a time, depending on the value of the coins. Never sell them to a coin shop if you want good money for your coins. Expect coin shops to pay roughly 1/3-2/3 of it's worth. They only pay decent for silver or gold bullion. Most of the people selling to coin shops either don't know the business, or don't wanna deal with selling their coins elsewhere. Are any of them slabbed?

One more thing, get a 2008 Red Book. You can find it in just about any book/coin store, and Wal-Mart carries it. It's about $12 and will allow you to get a really good idea for the value of your coins. Sorry if you already have one, just trying to think of everything here :)

  3. One visit to the coin dealer & you will scratch that idea. The need to make a profit (that's how it works -right?), so you will need to take a loss.

A lot of good info posted above. I'm into coins as well but am also not really buying any right now. Doing an inventory of the coins is the smartest first step to take, good idea. Do a little research into pricing and then shop them around. You can also check out pricing here but you have to have an idea of condition http://www.pcgs.com/prices Also note these values are for certified coins in those grades. Between it and a red book you should get a rough idea about what your collection is worth.

Thanks, 90% of the coins have a condition marked on the holder (EX, UNC, XFN), or are Proof coins. then there are some sealed mint bags fron the 1970's and alot of rolled buffalo nickels with dates marked on the rolls. I spent 4 hours yesterday and got about 60% inventoried.
