    Hi.

Which workshop manual would you think is the best for rebuilding a 308gt4 engine ?

The most detailed one with step by step explications and pictures.

    Thanks

There is a parts manual with exploded images of the engine with the part numbers included. I have the mine printed in a binder. I will look for the PDF for you.

If you are doing this for the first time a good exercise is to print out the engine pages from the parts book, learn the Italian for o-ring and circle them on every page as when you get your gasket kit the orings likely wont be labeled at all so it helps to have them all identified so you dont miss one on reassembly.

The best factory manual covering the V8 in the Mondial manual for the Mondial 8 and the Mondial QV.

It will not however have any information on your distributors or carburetors And you will have to refer to your owners manual for correct cam timing specs . Also on GT4 there were different cams used so you should confirm which ones you have. Do not count on which ones it is supposed to have, confirm which ones you have.

Section "B" "ENGINE" of the Dino 308GT4 Workshop Manual has all the clearances and specs to rebuild the engine. It also has some assembly procedures but if this is your first foray into rebuilding an engine, I would HIGHLY recommend you let a shop do it! You are going to need a machine shop to do work regardless of whether you assemble it, or they do!

I know about the risk rebuilding a Ferrari engine as an <amateur>. I have a friend who is a professional carmechanic and passionated about classic cars and restauration. We are actually evaluating to do it ourself. By the help of his knowhow, literature and videos. We found some on youtube.
    Can you recommend videos?

There is a stop animation video of an engine reassembly on YT which might be worth watching but I have not seen anything that is really a comprehensive “how to” guide. Even with the help of your friend you will need a good machinist that is not learning on your dime.

SPC = Spare Parts Catalogue (it's what Ferrari prints on the covers of their spare parts catalogues to let you know that it is a spare parts catalogue ;))

MCP = Maranello Classic Parts (it's where that link will take you -- just select "308 GT4 Dino 1976" in the model field on the left from the list of F models). Whether you use them, or not, to buy your parts, you should take advantage of their website as a useful reference as they have pictures of almost every part.

Also check at Lou Trottier’s series of videos on his 308 engine rebuild. Might be some nuggets in there that help.

I can share my experience in rebuilding the 308 GT4 engine. It is really a relatively simple engine, which is probably why it is so durable if well kept. Unfortunately, there are no step-by-step instructions on how to do this, and the factory shop manual only gives you the specs and very basic instructions. It assumes that you have the required knowledge and training. The main development by Ferrari is in the heads, which need to be carefully checked by a specialized shop

I had previously rebuilt a 911 engine, and can suggest (if this is your first engine) getting a book like Wayne's engine rebuilding book (it's for the 911, but it's great in that it gives you step-by-step instructions for beginners). Then, you just transpose the basic steps to the 308 engine with the appropriate specs. The machine shop is your new best friend, bring them all the parts to be checked. Also, you will need some basic MIG welding skills to make up tools that are NLA or stupid expensive.

I also found the Mondial manual to be much more informative than the early 308 one, but there is no Hayne's manual or equivalent AFAIK. I have pictures of disassembly and reassembly if that helps. Lots of good info and experts here in the forum, search and ask away!

As noted you're not going to find that but within the list given, including the Mondial manual, you will find all of the pertinent data and specs. They are not going to tell you how to rebuild an engine though and there is going to be a list of special factory tools that you are mostly going to have to improvise on because they are either unavailable or far too expensive for what would essentially be a single use. If you have the machine work done by a shop that knows these engines they can maybe help you with questions or perhaps even lend you some tools. Overall you're probably going to need at least some guidance and advice even if that just involves interpreting and understanding the manuals but in the end it's just an engine and all of the usual rules and procedures are the same as any other.

Hi, yes of course. I'm not the expert that many others here are but I'll try to help if I can. I'll try to post the pictures on a rebuild thread so that others can access them as well.
