When a web site has a "Beta Version' what does that mean?

The Virtual Stock Exchange has one that's a ton easier to use than the regular version. Is it a temporary thing? I'd hate to load up all my virtual accounts and then it disappear in 6 months.

It's a test version..... dunno about the rest. I used several Google Earth beta versions before and each time I downloaded a new version it kept all my info intact.

Beta usually means it's an upgrade over the previous version, or that it is no longer prototypical.

You start with alpha and then go to beta there can be numerous versions under these and eventually you get to a finished product. Chances are your info will be kept intact and eventually they will release a final product for use (version 1.0 etc) that is no longer beta but is complete. usually betas since they are a work in progress have some issues/problems etc. that get worked out by the final version (which will still have problems!)
