Ever wonder why there are so many nore deer killed on the road at this time of year? It is because this is the rut. The temperature drops, the doe come into estrus, and the bucks, with a very keen sense of smell start paying attention to the does. They chase them nonstop trying to get a chance to meet a receptive doe. This is called running, or chasing the doe. This in turn leads to a whole lot more road crossings, especially at night. As with many things it is explainable with sex. I wonder if this is where the term feeling horny comes from? Probably so. Any time from now on, but especially after Halloween, when the rut will be on and in full force, until Thanksgiving, be more aware. There are hunters in the woods also and this tends to move deer as well. Pass this info on please and be careful out there. If people understand this more they may avoid an unecessary accident.
Absolutely. I hit a deer on the highway once--more of a glancing blow, really--but it's scary as hell and dangerous.
My uncle is a HUGE deer hunter...but the last few years he has complained that he gets more with his truck than he does with his gun
Seriously nice post. I had no idea there are a lot of deer in the desert region that im at. I wake up around 5am and there are about 2-3 of them laying on the front yard just chillin. It gets dark out here and as im driving at night, you can see them running across the street with no hesitation. I havent it run yet, but came really close a couple of nights ago.
Both my wife and I have hit deer near our new home, which is out of the city a bit, and among 40-100+ acre lots, so lots of habitat. I had a glancing blow which shattered a carbon fiber front lip, but did no other damage, while my wife cracked her grille and bumper (she actually killed the deer). I'm looking into a sturdy grill guard for her, as my instinct tells me this won't have been the last time. On a side note, we saw 8 elk on another neighbor's lawn recently. Now that would be a serious impact! Be careful, drive aware, and keep 'er shiny side up. Tad
I saw two down today. The same number as from Jan. through Sept. I was starting to wind the M5 up coming home from western Maryland one night in Nov. a couple years ago and then thought what a deer strike would be like at say 140mph. Needless to say, prudence was the way.
We went to see a Jewish friend in Baltimore off Reisterstown Rd in Pikesville. Below the Beltway (Jewish neighborhood). We had to scatter the deer just to park. Deer? In town? Her garden wiped out? Oy vey!
I saw a deer get hit a couple of weeks ago. They are definitely out more this time of year. Be careful on the roads!
I've grazed and hit more deer and wild/domestic animals I can't remember them all.....I found out the key is to honk your horn...not joking! Just lay on the some *****
I was heading south on the NJ Turnpike last Saturday night and saw 5 deer standing at the side of the road between Exit 8 and 8A. They were just staring at the highway, looking as if they really, really wanted to try crossing 10 lanes of Turnpike.
This doesn't surprise me.....the sport of hunting deer is very-much in decline all across America. If adequate food/habitat is available, deer populations can soar even in semi-urban environments. Now, if only the critters would just walk in front of every anti-hunting tree-hugger's car when they're barrelling down the highway in their Prius at 65 MPH.....
They are like rats around here. I'm on 5 wooded acres 2 miles from the mall. It seems like the more suburban growth we have the more they like it. They walk across my stretchy pool cover. Ate my Japanese pines. It's nothing to see 20 in my front yard at dusk. My Lab has 2 acres of underground fence and he used to keep them out. Now he's 7 and just lays there. My wife talks to them so I can't shoot at them. This year in Ohio you can harvest up to five in season. If you look close there's a little one with mom. This pic is 20 feet from my backdoor. No, but I'll look into that. Feeding the birds attracted them so we stopped that 10 years ago. But the past winter I stayed at my home office more than work and put a feeder by the window. After they found it they would tear it down every night. So I stopped that. The next growing pest in the suburbs of the mid-west is coyotes. We have them. You don't see them much except as road kill, but you can hear them. They don't always howl but make the sound of a coon fight, or an animal in a trap. They may prey on the small deer, but are hard on the pets. We think we lost a cat to one.
I use to deer hunt back in the 70's when it was a challenge. As the populations made it easier I got bored with it. The last deer I took was with a 357 handgun. I said I wouldn't go again until I got proficient with a bow. Never got around to it. Went duck hunting.
A few months ago, I was driving my '99 Concorde 65 up a HWY. A HUGE buck ran full speed into the side of my car, starting with his head into the windshield, whipped around and totalled both doors, got under the rear wheel and ripped my rear bumper in half. $3200 in damage and three big deer chunks on the road....It was REALLY gross! If the buck was a secod slower, he would probably of been through my passenger side window. I sold my 25th Aniversary Honda Goldwing after two near misses. The bike was SO quiet, the deer can't hear you (Ever heard of a Harley hiting a deer, they run!). Flying was problematic also. At our little mountain airfield, I had to do low fast passes often to get the deer off the runway, go aroud and land. I dreaded hitting one on landing in the early evenings. This scenario DOES happen often where I live! YUK! Image Unavailable, Please Login
Well, aside from the 'sport' of it.....venison tastes good! And it has less fat than beef! Now, if only it were more 'socially acceptable' to eat venison....
I tend to drive about 35-40MPH at night this time of year. I'm twenty-one, and I've never hit any wild animal day or night.
If aged and cooked correctly, venison is the BOM! Deer are SO stupid though. Probably the dumbest animal on earth! Image Unavailable, Please Login
I've never hit a deer, but here is what a raccoon will do to a Testarossa spoiler at 90 mph... And note these pics were taken after I cleaned the blood and guts off my car (Actually, I had my detailer friend give my TR a thorough wash the next morning. I even woke him up and out of bed to come and clean it. Alex at AUTOMOBILIA AUTO SALON in Orange, CT. does great work !!!! ) Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Here is a repellant that seems to work for protecting plantings from deer. http://www.walterreeves.com/insects_animals/article.phtml?cat=21&id=901
