I just busted my 13 year old with her own private phone number with Net Zero! They also have free email. All the kids do is go on-line to Net Zero and sign up (They have to be 18 years old, and the kids simply click YES, I'm 18)! They get their free email and free phone number that they can access anytime!

Chelsea is in SUCH triple digit Mama-KaKa hot water trouble, it's not even funny!

When I called Net Zero, I had to go through about four supervisors to get her numbers and email acounts canceled!

At the WHills office, they put me through to an admin person that put me through to a supervisor that took a bunch of info from me on her (Chelsea's) account. They will be deleting the email and phone message account in the next 24 hours. The guy told me they are starting to get about 50 such calls a day from irate parents!

I DID leave Chelsea a voice message on her 'Private Line' telling her that we have 'A LOT to talk about' tonight!

Is there any upside to having kids nowadays? It was just so simple for my parents to keep track of my sister and I back in the day. We were either outside on a bike, or inside on an Atari. No e mail, no instant mail, no cell phones, at least none that would fit in pocket, no myspace...etc etc. (sigh)

What's wrong with your daughter having her phone line? Was she not allowed to use the phone or am I missing something? What's going on

Becuase Yahoo has it too. Voice Mail, and I believe Aim does the same. All come with the account that you sign up with.

I had my own telephone line when I was about 10 so it is normal for me to think that kids have it.

The problem I see with it is that she didn't ask for it or have it given to her by her parents she just did it herself. She may have known her parents didn't want her having a line and this was a way around them.

Is it like a vonage type thing? Where do you plug the phone in? The computer?

She has a cell phone and use of the house phone. It's all about having a secret phone number and email account that is NOT allowed in our house! The NetZero is a phone number for messaging (She calls her phone # and enters her PIN and gets her messages).

She just added another month to already being in computer jail (She got her desktop taken away last month for smart-mouthing). She knew she was not suposed to do crap like this and is being punushed! I can hardly wait until she's 16!!!

Peter, does she know you’re discussing this private family matter on a public forum? I'm sure she has ways of finding out, kids today are a lot smarter than you think. It's all too easy for some of them now a days to purchase airline tickets & journey to a new friend from myspace.com.

And when the streetlights came on, we had exactly 10 minutes to get our butts home.....

Imagine what the USA will be like in 20-30 years when these socially illiterate kids are managing companies...

    Lol, no! only 20

I got ya! It's more of a concept of what she is doing rather than the phone line. But it looks like she is going to get it bad this time so hopefully she'll remember.

You should scare her and tell her how all these things she is doing is going to effect her Super Sweet 16. Like that car she could of had gotten is pooof or even the party. She'll heallllllllll like a good girl.

Does she know she skirted your rules or did she think "free cell phone, cool!" There's a big difference there.

I don't mind a 'free' cell phone service: I DO mind that kids today may as well have a cell phone glued to the side of their heads, I had one here that used about 2,200 minutes a month - AND used the house phone, AND I.M. on top of those. It's crazy.
There is a use for Blue Tooth - but not for kids.

Super Sweet 16? A free car? That is totally not what a parent should have to resort to in order to control their kids. That's utter BS, if "threatening" the removal of REWARDS (despite outlandish behaviour) is your only means of keeping a leash on your kids, then you have a lot more issues to contend with than just your offsprings misbehaving.

Whatever happened to the good old fashioned method of instilling total fear in your kid from day 1? That's what went on with me and my brother, and we turned out just fine. I'm totally against the above method in which you have to shower your kids with rewards to keep them happy and semi-obedient. Guess who's in control in that situation.. yeap, not you ;)

If you are going to be too harsh on your kids, they'll never come and talk to you. They'll always be scared that what are about to tell you might make you angry or not be the right thing to say. Then they'll find other ways to express their thoughts and feelings so they'll get a BF. Once they get a BF, you are in means controling them what so ever.

Rewards has always worked with everything.

You make a valid point to an extent. And I agree with a bit of what you're saying: me and my brother never actually "reached-out" to our parents when we were down, but neither did we resort to unconventional meas such as drugs or drinking, things like that. I guess we just learned to suck it up and deal with it... We were always tought to be content with what we have and make the most of it, even if there wasn't much to begin with. Don't get me wrong, I know I grew up scared ****less of dissapointing my father and mother, but I have the utmost respect for them because we both matured into responsible kids.

I realize you have to strike a balance between the fear/reward methodology, but IMO, I'd tip the scales a bit in fear's favour :)
