    Was on Block Island 30-some odd years ago. Watched a guy in a float plane make several aborted take off runs from LI sound toward Block Island. Last attempt he got it off the water and caught the power lines running along the shoreline road. Crashed into the gas pumps at a little gas station/restaurant with people eating outside. Killed everyone on board and one person on the ground. 20 feet to the left and he would have would have taken out all the diners.

    Says something about the structural integrity of the Stearman that the pilot was basically uninjured. I don't necessarily disagree with his decision (if bad weather was indeed closing in) but his execution left something to be desired.

    Surprised how few photos (1?) and articles I found searching this accident. I'm from CT and have visited Block Island many times. This was a shocking accident at the time.
    Can anyone dig up more photos of aftermath?

    You can find more pics of the Hindenburg disaster in 1937. :rolleyes: There are pics out there (newspapers, etc.) but not digitized I guess.
