What does anyone know about bi-polar condition?
http://www.nimh.nih.gov/publicat/bipolar.cfm That link has a ton of information and its a .gov so its reliable.
A holy nightmare of a mental condition......RUN AWAY! DO NOT let the cute name fool you. Yes, it has varying degrees of severity, but the medical cure for these sufferers leaves them emotionally flat-lined. TERRIBLE for relationships - the mood swings are tempered with drugs to leave you with someone who is emotional cardboard. Yes, they're not reaching for the kitchen knives during the low parts of their mood swings, but their upswings are equally dull. As Carbon pointed out, sex might be interesting - born out of lonliness and desperation from not being able to maintain normal relationships (see above).
Dude, what do you do for a living that "too many of your clients suffer from it"...? Are you a psychiatrist, a sex therapist or nun uniform vendor...?
I'm in television/film post production. I work with producers, directors, etc. Seriously though, one of my producers is on litium and the mood swings, I can't even describe.
I would've never guessed there'd be so many bi-polar people in any given field... Damn... Good luck...
A lot of supposedly "bi-polar" people are actually just b!tchy, whiney a$$h0les that can't cope with daily life.
I agree great sex, but the rest sucks. I dated this girl, and she had to take like 5 pills a day just to be a "productive member of society" Some of those pills were to counter act some of the side effects of the crazy pills. Here in Seattle it seams that 1/2 of the girls are bi-polar. (By their own admission, not speculation)
I work with violent kids and many are bi-polar. It's truly a very sad thing to watch. At the age I work with, meds are often hard to regulate and when they do, there is still a great deal of difficulty functioning with normal life.

The way you folks glibly generalize about a very serious, permanent mental illness is amazing. Educate yourselves a little, then try again. If he had asked for help with a problem concerning lung cancer, or heart disease, would you all have been so friggin' casual? http://www.mentalhealth.com/dis/p20-md02.html http://www.bpkids.org/site/PageServer?pagename=lrn_about http://www.bipolar.com/whatis/bipolar-disorder.htm Bi-polar disorder isn't a joke, or a sexual adventure looking for a place to happen.. It's a VERY dangerous mental illness, with a high incidence of suicide. I don't say this here often, but, GROW THE **** UP. DM
Bi-polar is a very scary problem IMHO. In some cases it can lead to sucide. My Father and I lost one of our very close friends last year as a result. Often it can be treated with medication however it takes time to find a medicine that works efficiently. Often the person will experience side effects that aren't wanted. Such as weight gain, and almost being like a zombie lacking all parts of emotion. While I do not know much about the disease. I know what its like to watch someone struggle with it. If you need any help or someone to talk to let me know. Watching someone struggle and take ups and downs like they do when they are un medicated is very SCARY you would never believe that it was/is the same person. Just my two cents. Erik
Hmm.. someone asks a serious question about a serious condition that could be afflicting a potentially loved one, and you get mature responses like "Run away".. Great! Avalon, I dont know much about the diesease but in researching mental illness's in the past, I could safely say google is your friend. Look for forums for bipolar disorder people, there would be some out there that would be more than helpful.
i once dated an 18 year old girl who was self-admittedly, but not diagnosed, bi-polar. it was AWESOME! and it was horrible... the experience wore me out - in every way.
dave, avalon was extremely vague and gave no indication of it concerning someone close so its not unusual in this forum to get those responses. My link is to what i believe about that area of practice. But if i had lung or heart problems i wouldn't ask a bunch of motorheads for the cure. The best results by far could be found on the appropriate forum. Just as with all areas of human experience there are EXTREMELY usefull forums that discuss such things. I know from dealing with medical issues with my own family members.
Thanks for the responses all… I was purposely guarded as I was interested in seeing candid reposes, for better or worse. I am bipolar. Have been my entire adult life. Why make an admission over a message board to a major mental illness? 1) This is an off-topic forum and I’ve seen topics that were much worse… If Carrie Fisher can come out on TV in front of millions, maybe I can pass along a little “truth” and prevent stereotypes. Maybe not… 2) I have nothing to hide; you’re all a screen name to me and can only judge me on what little you know. Have made friends here and plan to make more… you’d never know if you met me on the street or did business with me over a long period of time. 3) The general public is grossly mis-informed as illustrated here. And I don’t mean that in a spiteful way… it’s just how it is. 4) Not looking for a cure from motorheads, just opinions from motorheads. There is no cure, you can only hope to learn how to get though life as balanced as possible. 5) Directors/Producers/Artists/Musicians and many, many brilliant people suffer. Somewhere in your noggin, where the wires got crossed the creative brain got a little extra. Not necessary always a good thing. 6) I can be b1tchy and whiney but coping with life is not an option for anyone with BP. You MUST cope with life. 7) You take pills to go up, pills to go down, pills to wake you up and pills to get you back asleep. All part of attempting balance…. They are your lifeline and you must commit to never missing or coming off. 8) You will burn though relationships like smokers go though butts. The good will be better than anything you ever experienced in your life, but the lows? You WILL run! With good reason… unless they have it under control and commit to being well. That’s all really... not getting “deep” on anyone, looking for sympathy or even advice. I have more blessings than I could have ever expected or even wanted, my daughter being my world. I learn every day a little more about being balanced, but will NEVER know what it’s like to live where you all do. Only up in the stratosphere or down in the gutter emotionally. It can be heaven and it can be hell… untreated it can develop into schizophrenia. But with therapy, meds, a strong will, family support system and lots of patience… you MIGHT just pull though. I know I will. Billy
