I'm so happy we're playing Ohio State in the second game of the season this year. Even if we get beat, at least it's not two walk in the park games before the real season starts. Should see really fast how well UT will do this year in a few weeks.

A win against a bad team may bring your W/L record up but it won't count much toward your rankings.
btw most colleges lose money from their football programs, Notre Dame and a few other big names are the few exceptions

Well if by "a few" you mean most of the SEC, and the top schools in all the other conferences, then OK. I'm certainly no expert, but I know that the Vols (hmm, by some coincidence that is part of my screen name) generate a lot of revenue for UT. 110,000 seats filled for every game at 45 bucks each.... Of course for big games you're lucky to get seats for 100 bucks, and people pay well north of that routinely. Than there's the fact that the population of Knoxville doubles on game day, with the resultant revenue for hotels and restaurants. In states like Nebraska, the stadium becomes the second or third largest city in the state by population on game day. And they seat a lousy 80 odd thousand. College football is big business. And if you'll excuse me for saying so, Notre Dame is nothing special in that respect. Different, but not special. Of course you have to keep in mind that notre Dame is the most hated program in the country, so you get no slack. It's nothing personal, we just all root for any team that's playing Notre Dame. :) It's my father's favorite saying: "My two favorite teams are Tennessee and whoever is playing Notre Dame!"

Where there are TV rights, schools will get money. Another SEC alum here, UF. I don't think they lose money. 90k+ seats sold out and a huge fan following. Football is just too big in the SEC. After our bball championship, I doubt our athletic department is running a deficit. ;)

I'm an alumnus of a (now) SunBelt Conference school. We play money games at the beginning of each season -- this year we start with a road game at Texas. These blowouts are never fun, but everyone accepts that they have to be in place. Money games pay for better facilities, and better facilities lead to better recruits and eventually to a better program.

Not true. Assuming we're talking Division I schools, the football programs generate tremendous amounts of revenue. Quite often, it's as high as 80% of the school's academic budget. But because money needs to be diverted to other unprofitable programs, football stands out as a large drain. As the highest-profile sport, football also creates additional revenue through indirect ways, like merchandising. Football=$$$.

I disagree with our miseducated Voluteer fan, but hey, can't blame em, after all, the most advanced class at UT is 'Simple Addition 101'.
I disagree with the statement that Notre Dame is the most hated program in the land. That's an opinion, and will change based on your polling sample. You've lost exactly half and you've won exactly half of your games against the Irish. Brings the total to 4 games a piece.
Tennessee is bringing in more money from Peyton Manning this year to renovate the locker rooms because they are in a DECREPID state. That's not an opinion, that's a fact, widely discussed among the players, and that's why Peyton's doing something about it.
And $45 a ticket is a STEAL at the BOTTOM of the SEC, so why are Tennessee tickets so cheap?
All that money and you still have to play a country tune for your 'fight song'...

This is BUSINESS, it's no different in ANY sport - Pro or College, in fact, it's true of any BUSINESS - retail, wholesale or service industry - you charge what your clientelle can afford, and if you charge too much, you either lower your prices, or you go broke and close down.

I'm seeing house for sale all over here - 'price reduced'.

Ooh, flamed by a cock! Let me guess, you weren't an English major! :D

Tell you what, visor boy is the best hire you ever made. He very well may bring you the sort of flash-in-the-pan notoriety he brought to Florida. Even Lou couldn't do that.

For those unfamiliar with SEC football, this has been a friendly exchange!

Imagine that, a Tennessee fan jumping the gun...Just because I live in South Carolina you think I'm a Cock fan. I know you've seen some of my other posts here, namely the NAME YOUR COLLEGE TEAM thread just a short time ago.

Here's a hint: I'm an alum of a team that beat the Vols last year. I know that doesn't narrow it down TOO well, but at least you might have a clue now.
