No, This really was not meant to be a lawyer joke! >>This Mako was hooked in the mouth, only fought slightly for 15 minutes, came up along side of the boat to have a look, long enough for one of the crew to put a rope around its tail. That's when the **** hit the fan, the Shark took off towing the 42 foot fishing boat backwards through the water at about 7 Knots. Just like in JAWS. The boat was taking on water, the Shark would jump completely out of the water at times. This went on for an hour before the Shark actually drowned. He weighed in at 1035 LBS.<< DL
Thats sad..... What was the point of pulling that shark out of the water and it dieing? Have the people never seen a shark before?
Wow, I'm assuming that it was in Halifax, judging by the phone prefix on the crane. What a beautiful creature, too bad it died......
not pointless, a mako is an EXCELLENT eating shark, very similar to swordfish, slightly different texture. This one is a beauty. Sadly, this is most likely a female due to size, and they mature rather late, but still, if your gonna keep one..might as well be a beast like this one!
Pointless Cruelty?? What'd you have for dinner? I hope it wasn't fish...or beef....or pork....or chicken..... It's not cruelty to go fishing, they just caught a really big one.
It is when their are less sharks around. I love sharks, and they do make good eaten' but I don't want them to go extinct.
I guess some of you folks don't know that the shark populations have been decimated and varioius types are now endangered? Somehow I don't think chickens are endangered.
First of all, like Darth pointed out, this was a Mako not a Great White. Second the article you pointed out says that trade in Great Whites is still allowed but now simply requires a permit. Second.... maybe were just not eating enough chicken yet. So what DID you have for dinner?
Trust me, if that shark had the opportunity to eat you and your family, it would! So whats wrong with eating it?
ESPN has a show that has been on frequently. It's a monster Shark tournament held in Martha's vineyard. I think it was a two or three day event. Pretty cool to watch. They are allowed to keep one per day. It has to be a certain size. Can only be a thresher shark, blue chark or a mako. This may be a pic from the tournament. All the sharks caught and brought back are killed. I guess at M.V there is a HUGE shark population and it's actually part of population control for the area. When the sharks are brought back, they are cut open and examined by scientists. Afterwards, they are precessed and brought to the local restraunts. Mako Sharks are quite common. Anyway, good show to watch. They show a lot of locals reactions to sharks. They interview a lot of the fisherman in the area. Most hate them and are scared to seath of them. Check it out...worth watching especially if your an outdoorsman. j
JustThrowIt-special on the oak bluffs shark tournament I believe...based out of martha's vineyard. Never have I seen such a concentration of threshers...wierd.
Yo D, I thought this thread was going to be about your favorite member on this site. Ya know, the one with the plane
poor shark. Okay, the pics are impressive, but I rather see those animals alive. On Discovery Channel. This is just a waste of a beautiful animal. And totally for nothing
Wow. From the size one would think that is a Great White. That thing is huge. I have a set of three shark jaws displayed on my wall. they are only reef sharks, so not that big, but the jaws are so impressive. 150-200 teeth on each set. The way the teeth are set up is crazy. Behind each showing tooth is about 5 nearly full size teeth that are laying down on top of each other. When a tooth is lost, the next folds up. Its amazing.
OH for the love of crap! The town this happened in is Yarmouth Nova Scotia (bonus for SurfCity for coming at least in the same area) The shark is beautiful but Mako's are plentiful, How can anyone try to anthropomorphize a shark? Remember a few years ago in the Jaws frenzy everyone and their dog wanted nothing to do with sharks now all of a sudden it is "lets be kind to the big predator that will gladly eat and consume you without a thought other than keeping itself alive..." Turn off the Disney channel. it's a fish now excuse me I need to go club some baby seals
That's a free-range shark. I usually only eat farm-raised sharks. Seriously though, it's a little tough to see such a majestic animal killed. I hope they did at least process it as much as possible.
They say to punch a shark in the nose if it attacks you. what if that just pisses him off more? Has anyone tried that?
